im real thinkin of putting an lt77 in with my 200tdi iv read the post down the page wich has cleared up my hand brake problem iv got no probs with fitting the box and moving the cross member but wich transferbox should i use i got the impression its not very good to be running 4wd on series axels is it a problem or not? and what do you do about the speedo thanks.

The UJs in the front axle on a Series do not like running in perminant 4wd.

Ashcroft Transmission do (or did do) a kit that allows you to put the Series transfer box on the back of an LT77.

The early 110 was also selectable 4wd (like a Series) so there must/may be some way of making the LT230 transfer box selectable.

To be honest most people don't bother and just run the Series gearbox.

Depending on what gearing you use (diff's, tyre size..) you will need to either recalibrate your speedo from the series - do a search on Google there is a place in Bradford?? that charges about 50 quid but I have lost the web link. Or you can use a Defender speedometer.

Regarding front axle U/J's can someone explain to me why they don't like being used in permanent four wheel drive when using the LT230 transfer box yet when the standard series gearbox is used, they are constantly turning, albeit not being driven as the drive is to the rear wheels only.....these things are keeping me awake at night.......:D:doh:

Or do wot most peeps do - take a mate and a satnav out.
drive at 30 on the satnav and then read yo speedo. repeat at 10mph intervals.

mark on speedo correct values or write on a piece of paper and stick on dash.

so the series speedo cable fits the lt77. the reason for wanting to swop was at first i thought it would cheeper than buyin an overdrive i know theres more work to this but after pricing every thing up its not gonna be no cheeper so think ill stick to the overdrive idea.

It is because a single UJ, like that in the front hub of a Series is not a constant velocity joint in the same way as a 'proper' CV in the front of a coil sprung axle.

You need a pair UJs link by a shaft to make a CV joint....such as the pair you find on a prop shaft.

Therefore the single UJ in each hub will have to cope with the change in velocity of each wheel as you turn a corner.

20 years ago it was fairly common to fit a RR engine & box to a Series, in practise I never heard of anyone having problems.
