Hi all,
Just a quick question today. I’m looking to get my Lt230 transfer box rebuilt for my TD5 90 and saw on ashcrofts website they do a 1:310 ratio and wondered if anyone has had this ratio or is running it at the moment. I do a far bit of towing sometimes so the 1.22 ratio doesn’t really fit what I’m after. If no one has any experience with it I’ll just stick to the 1.410 ratio which is standard for all TD5 defenders.

Thanks, Sam

When the td5 Defender first came out with new owners moving on from older tdi models they found the td5 rather poor when starting off towing but plenty of go once moving.
Stalling at junctions was often a complaint.
Td5 just did not pull low down like the tdi's. Drivers would need to give the unit more beans to start off.
Some had ecu remapped for better low down power. Not sure about this but think Land Rover also made changes to later td5 ecu's after the complaints.

My mate had a 1.6 and I had a 1.2 in our D90's (200/300tdi).
His car was like an automatic, hardly and gear change=s needed and I was bogging down with a trailer and when starting off on a hill.
We have both fitted 1.4's. Both our our defenders 'drive' a lot better, mine has more get up and go and his goes faster than 50mph without the engine screaming.

The TD5 has more power to start with so i'd think the 1.3 would offer a reasonable compromise but I still think it would be a bit sluggish when starting off especially when towing.
