Hey guys ive been looking at the lrc 2690 snorkel as it gives me the look I want without spending a huge amount. I was wondering if anyone had one already and what there option on it is. Also would I have any adverse effects on a 300tdi?
Thanks a lot
Ben

Not got one of that type.

But would sugggest a few things.

If you want it because you are going wading, make sure it is water tight.
If you are going greenlaning, then make sure you can get a new top cover, I have lost one before on a low branch.
Only adverse affect on my 300tdi, is that it restricts airflow, So I can only get 23Psi of boost.

Cheers

Thanks I’m not planning on wading any deeper than I would do without a snorkel so I’m not to worried about that although you bring up a good point with the branches I’ll take a look around. Also does yours have a cyclone top on it or does it have one of the large open ones because I’ve heard they can improve boost pressure. Not that I’m worried if I wanted a powerful landy I would have got a td5 and re mapped it

So if your not planning to wade any deeper than without a snorkel, why bother having one?
Well I like the look of them and what I should have said is I don’t plan on wading any deeper but it the water is clean like the lake side track at billing off road show then I will I just don’t particularly want to do deep muddy wading if I can avoid it

Deep "clean" water will still knacker your engine if it gets in the wrong place. Make sure you know how deep it can go, do not rely on a bow wave to try and stop water entering.

Cheers
Yep I certainly don’t plan on hydrolocking her. Just would rather clean water to mud. When I bought her and stripped her to clean the amount of mud I washed out the radiator and intercooler was way to much.

Problem is , you do the lakeside run and you will want to have done the mud run as well.........a little voice will be saying.."Go on, do it!". Top tip, make sure your windows are closed.

Hahaha Your right about the little voice last time I listened to that I got in a pickle. Do those radiator covers work for keeping the mud out?

They can help a little bit, but will not stop it, sloppy mud still gets into the fins. I have put 6mm wire mesh in front of mine, stops a lot of the weed at billing and other places sticking to the rad and intercooler. After every outing I run a garden hose thru the rad and intercooler. Once a year i normally pull them out and and lay them in the garden and wash the fins with a hose a few times until i can see daylight through it again.

Cheers

Dunno why you'd think that, they suck air in, not a ram air effect ...

Thanks for the advice it would be worth me making a habit of that.

I fitted one to my 200 tdi, Thought it would make it look butch. The MPG dropped by about 5 mpg and it didn't seem to have the same amount of power. After wading through a few rivers I realised all I was doing was wrecking my Defender. Did I need to go through the river? NO. I removed the snorkel after a while. Plus if your going to go wading you need to make sure the snorkel has a good seal. Below, my Defender straight and with the toys on it.

I fitted a Safari snorkel to my 200 quite a few years ago and as soon as I used it for the first time afterwards I noticed the power was down, to confirm on my next commute journey I disconnected it under the bonnet and yes the power was back, next day reconnected it and it was again down on power.
I think on the 200 the tiny diameter pipe from snorkel to air filter is just to small, add in the excessive length from top of snorkel to the air filter and its doomed to fail.
Back then I left it diconnected under the bonnet when used as my daily, these days its a spare car so its left piped up all the time.

I did contact Safari for their opinion and their sales blurb radicalised plonker said most people saw an increase in power due to the ram air effect, Iirc ram air effect doesnt take place until well over 100mph:D

Dont get me wrong it does what it says on the tin and looks good, but you also have to remember there are other systems that also need modding for deep wading.

I put a snorkel (Mushroom Top) on my 200tdi 90 and it felt strangled, but no more than the standard setup - then realised the atrocious plastic angle plumbing from the wing vent was actually a restrictor. So plumbed a flexible pipe from the air box direct to the snorkel pipe through the wing and sealed all the gaps with Sikaflex - it was 100% watertight (much deliberate wading done) and it felt less choked, this was further improved with a deleted exhaust silencer. It was all marginal improvements but I had confidence in deep water (clean or muddy).
On the 110 Td5 I just sold, I re-fitted a Safari snorkel as the previous owner had ripped it off the wing and the holes were a mess! By running this setup with a standard air filter it had no performance benefit (which was not the objective) but it was at least watertight as the plumbing was simpler. Swapping the air filter for a Pipercross element and a mid pipe delete made it less wheezy (235kmile engine) and it pulled like a train with a new MAF but there is zero ‘Ram air’ effect - that’s a myth.

Golden rule is seal the drain plugs in the air box and lowest point on the ducting if you fit a snorkel as the rubber hardens/shrinks and will let in water if it’s submerged.

Never bothered with a Snorkel on all of my other Landy’s, bit like a Winch - don’t fit if it’s not going to be used.
