Got Td5 sorted, still got issues with the 90 rear drum brake. Never ends.
The story goes like this...
Nearside rear brake drum catches the shoes when rotating by hand. Tight-slack-tight-slack etc. It’s very evident under braking, I can feel a pulse through the pedal and when braking heavily the whole landy vibrates. The problem only started after replacing the original drums and shoes. Replaced with mintex shoes and bearmach drums. I have had them off and on numerous times checking they’re fitted correctly (spring positions etc) I know they’re right. Offside no problems. So, it looked like the hub was oscillating when holding a fixed object to the outside of the hub, so, I replaced the following with new genuine parts and tested each time. Hub, bearings, stub axle, half shaft, brake cylinder (original was leaking) another set of shoes (trw) and drums (britpart) and snail adjuster. No change at all. The only thing I haven not replaced is the backplate. That’s it.

Any ideas??

Ive had same problems with brake drums, they all seem to be oval to a certain extent,try chamfering the leading edge of your shoes...

Cheers for the reply, I’ll give it a go. Can’t see why it’s just the nearside at fault though. Drivers side is spot on
 
Now you mention it, it was the off side i had problems with, how come it has drum brakes on a td5 90 ???

Also chamfer the full length of the shoe...

It’s my 1988 90 with rear drums but I have an ex utilities Td5 that’s been a bit troublesome recently too. That’s sorted but it’s the 90 that’s being an arse now
 
Sounds like your new drums are not fully round. I've had to send sets back in the past - they came in a blue box...
I’ve tried two sets of drums from bearmach and blue box company plus I’ve swopped the drum from opposite side too. If I hadn’t have done all of that I’d say drums warped but looks unlikely. Like I said the hub did appear to rotate eccentrically/oscillate hence why I changed the hub, bearings and halfshaft.
 
You’re telling me! Apart from the backplate there’s nothing left to change. I rotated the drum without the halfshaft in so it’s not a bent shaft (I had replaced it with a spare just in case) And it still binds. I’ve had the landy in stands, applied the brake with the nuts loose to seat the drum bit that’s not made a difference.
 
Given all of the above you have done I would say your new n/s stub axle may not be true.
The problem was there before replacing the stub. I replaced it to rule it out. I’ll try and find a replacement back plate just to rule it out I think. I can’t see why or how that will be the cause but I’ve got nout else to replace.
 
I’ve got no pics yet but as soon as I’ve got a backplate I’ll put a pic on. I’m not going out and taking it apart now because I’m sick to death of dismantling it I can’t find the correct part number for my backplate. It has the single snail adjuster with the spring attached to the trailing shoe/backplate but all the ones I can find have two adjusters.
