Im still on the search for a suitable Range Rover to take me on a few light-ish expeditions over the next couple of years, starting with weekends in Wales, progressing to weeks across the Pyrennes, down to Morocco and maybe one day even Iceland! Ideally I wanted a Range Rover Classic 300Tdi auto, but have been looking for a couple of months now with nothing worth looking at coming on the market.
So, Ive widened my search a little, and found a lovely looking Classic, a soft-dash V8 with an LPG kit. The tank is where the spare wheel is, which is ideally out of the way, and Id mount a swingaway spare wheel carrier on the tailgate or fit a spare on a roof rack along with a roof tent (weight limits allowing). However, I understand the V8s can overheat anyway, and that LPG converted cars run hotter than standard petrols, so would I be asking for trouble taking one to Morocco? Also, Id use LPG through Europe but I doubt LPG is readily available in Africa, so would be running on petrol in Morocco would this be a problem either in terms of overheating or tank range?
The other option I have considered is a 2.5DSE P38a, of which there are several about. However, although the diesel engine is probably preferable to the V8 on LPG, the massive amount of electronics, air bag suspension, BECM modules, etc etc is a concern.
So expert overlanders, what would you do? Stick it out for a good Tdi Classic, or go with one of these options?
