I am thinking ahead to my lpg installation on my 72 classic, its a 3.5 on SU's.

Anyone know where the best place to get an installation done in the Hampshire area would be and how much it would cost?

Ther's an excellent place in Arlesford but I can't remember their name off the top of my head. I'll look it up when I get home. They seem to know their rangeys and they sorted mine out a treat.

I bought my RR with LPG already installed so I cant help you with recommending installers in Hampshire.

A couple of things to consider though:-

1/ The calorific value of LPG is less than petrol so fuel consumption will be between 10 and 20% higher than running on petrol

2/LPG is currently around 65p per litre so fuel costs will be similar to running a diesel overall.

3/I recommend a quality system, cheaper systems are more likely to be unreliable.

4/Make sure you get an installation certificate, you may need it for your insurance company.

5/On my car (an L322), apart from the LPG control switch lights, you cant tell whether its running on LPG or petrol.

6/There is a website www.go-autogas.com which will tell you all LPG outlets in the uk and prices.

Hope this is of help.

thanks for that guys, I know about the certificate which is whay I am not having a crack myself with used parts.

I was thinking of a replcament fuel tank with a small petrol tank for reserve. I have got a used one which has a 5 gallon petrol compartment, I was going to refubesh that and ditch the lpg canister for it and buy a new one as it looks like a standard size.

Not knowing that the local fitting place ballpark quoted me £1500 for a full installation, not sure which tank that comes with but it seems alot for a carb conversion???

Would it be a single point kit to use with twin SU carbs?

Speak to the guys at MRH in Hertford, Hertfordshire. They are doing some warranty work for me and know (and install) LPG systems and land rovers inside out. They are probably too far from you to do the installation work but I am sure they will advise you, I have found them exceptionally helpful.

When I had me Series with a V8 running carbs I looked into getting it converted to LPG. I'm in Hants, but spoke to a guy down Horsham way (sorry, dun't have his leaflet anymore) & he said it was barely worth the conversion if you're running carbs.

He said he'd done a few carb conversions and the savings were negligible. You really need to be running an injection system to make it worthwhile.

Me current disco has a quite basic system (third generation system I think, though might not even be that!) & means I can afford to run a 3.9 whilst covering a fairly high mileage.

In the really hot weather it's not been happy to change to LPG once it's upto temp', so on a run if I stop it needs to cool for a fair while before it'll switch over again.

The most recent systems are almost infallible if set up right, but for a Classic on carbs it won't be an option to you.

If you do it, I'd be cautious installing too small a petrol tank. I know where all the LPG stations are across the counties I regularly cover. That said I've often got to an LPG outlet only to find they're out or the feckin pumps bust! If you're going to install a small tank, get yourself a jerry can as back up!

Don't get me wrong, it's great being able to afford to run a V8 rumbler as an every day motor & I love it to bits, but it does take a bit of thought and planning to not have to fall back to running on guzzleine too often.

Sorry, LPG is great, but it's no panacea, spesh' on carbs! ;)

Im running 4 v8's on petrol at the moment and it is expensive, well 3 one is knackered lol

I was looking at a jerry can today with the very same thoughts, thing is with petrol being so unstable price wise it just seems to make sense for the 72 , especially as I am paying no road tax on it either!

You might be better off finding a 3.9 scrapper with LPG already installed & transferring it lock, stock and tanks into yours. Bit more work, but potentially cheaper & you can weigh in what's left when you're dun!

one of mine is a 3.9 but I have grave doubts about there long term surviveability on lpg , especially when they get to high miles.

I will be sticking with the tougher 3.5 not least becuase it has only done a few thousand miles as its a genuine LR replacement engine.

Fett,
Chap if you can't find anyone closer you could try Blaze autogas at Hullavington Airfield up here in Wilts.
They took a gander over my LSE when I first had it and made a few sensible suggestions. Added to that the chap that does the LPG work has a 3.9 classic. I assume its LPG.
Google it, it does come up.

It runs a bit hotter, apparently. That's about it. I can't say I've noticed, mines on 133K (albeit my Disco's only 12 yrs old). Runs better on LPG (if it's not too hot to switch over), though that is probably just a set up issue.

I get (an honest) around 23p per mile which is comparable to a doosul Disco & means I can run it as my every day motor.

Around town I was getting 12/14MPG out of my 3.5 V8 in the Series (I loved that motor......sob), which I just couldn't sustain. I can't be fecked to work out what that is per mile on current fuel costs, but more than me Disco...........oh, and me piles have gone down!

You pays yer money, yer takes yer choice. I'd put it on a 3.9i based on experience & from research a while back, but feck it, you've got a bunch of motors, mess about, blow a couple up, find a combo that werks............then let us leach your experiences for our own V8 rumbling ends. :D

my 97 disco was great on both petrol and lpg 105k single point was fitted in 2000 with 20 odd thou miles on it.

I am just debating if I can use the 80litre tank I have been given longways in the boot, opposite the spare wheel and up high to keep my folding seat load space???

I think it will be a good set up on the current 3.5 untill I get my long stroke motor built and I can have 4 liters-ish without slippy liners!

Fett, talk to Derek at:
Sussex Autogas Systems Ltd
Ganders Gate Farm, Kirdford, Billingshurst RH14 0LU
01403 820 446
His buisness is to do LPG conversions and he knows Landies inside and out - he drives a Defender on gas, his other mechanic drives a Classic on gas - he will give you advice and a price.
Tell him Tony sent you and he will double the price cos of the amount of work he has done on my P38

I get roughly 15mpg around the country roads and that equates to around 19p per mile, my Freelander on petrol gets 30mpg and that equates to 17p - so I pay an extra 2p a mile for the luxury of a Range Rover

MRH are on 01992 550026/582628. I think the LPG installer is Gerry.

Just for info, because the tank is pressurized, you cannot fill it completely so an 80 litre tank will only take 70ish litres of LPG.

Thanks guys , I will give them both a call to see the lay of the land, and find out if my local guy has ripped me off with his quote too!
