LPG or Not LPG that is the question????

:) Hi there,

Ive finally got all of our problems sorted and its time to start enjoying my RR again.
Im now thinking of putting it on LPG,so i just wanted some advice. I have read some of the previous threds on LPG and most of them just seem to be people having problems. Are they really that bad???

I know there are two kinds single and multi-point sequential. I have kind of got the idea that Multipoint is the way forward with a tank in my spare wheel well. but im not sure after reading some of the problems if i should do it. I do do alot of miles and it would pay for its self in about 5 months!

Does anyone have one or no of anyone that has got one that does not have any trouble? also where is the best place to get it done? Ive been quoted £1500.00 From a place in preston but im in Nottingham.

Mine is a RR 1998 with 125,000 miles on it

I have a p plate 4.6 HSE with Multipoint LPG, 95 litre tank (holds 75 litres of gas) in the spare wheel well and i have had no trouble with it so far only using about £6-£8 of actual petrol per month and the local LPG garage is running a loyality bonus skeam to get 1p per litre off when you put in more than 30 litres up to 10 pence per litre so for the 10th fill up i will get it for 41 ppl which is pretty good and after 1200 miles in the RR it cost me £15 less than the petrol car i was running for 1200 miles so i am all in favor of the LPG conversion ( i must point out i drove my petrol car very hard and i have been taking it easy in the RR ) but still i was surprised at making a saving.

All in all i am very impressed with the conversion and its really the only way i can afford to run the RR i hope you get other good reports

I also run a multi point system which is excellent. The system was fitted in 2006 by a company in Plymouth (not a lot of use to you i know) who I would highly recommend to anyone in the south west.

I had to replace the MAF on the car shortly after getting it which caused some rough running on gas, popped into the place that fitted it, had it re-tuned to suit the new MAF and its been perfect ever since.

I pay 46ppl from a local independant gas supplier or like The Dude above another garage is running a loyalty scheme which can save me up to 10ppl.

I think the difference between the old single point injection and the new multi point systems with thier own ECU is huge. I am very happy with both the performance I still get and the economy provided by the gas.

The on board computer somehow still manages to calculate MPG when running on gas. I am still averaging 15 to the gallon, mainly round town on gas. Financially that works out more like 34 MPG, not bad for a 4.6 V8.
 
No Brainer if you get it carried out by a recognised LPG Installer. Comes with a certificate for the Insurance Co, plus get the back up of the LPG installers Assoc.

Locally here in Hertford, MRH fitted a 120l tank behind front seats in my 3 door 110 3.5L V8 for £800 + vat, have to start on petrol until engine warms up a wee bit (about 2 miles) then switch over to gas. have done a mixed bag of trips, 5 miles to local shops etc and 350mile + round trip one day, at out side lane motorway speeds, no problems keeping up or with those long steep hills.
 
I'd say do it. In fact, I'd most likely shout it.

LPG is the way forward when you're running something like a Range Rover. I've had three LPG Classics (all manky old single point) and it's excellent stuff. Did a run to Devon and back in my old 3.9 in convoy with the girlfriend at the times mother who was in a 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa. Didn't hang about and it cost me less in the Rangie than it cost her in the Corsa.

I'm going to LPG my current one as soon as A: I find the funds, and B: I find someone reasonably local who'll do a multipoint system which will happily work with the turbo and C: I get the gearbox back into it.

LPG is also good for upsetting mindless environmentalists who think you're "ruining the planet", when you're using lovely clean fuel.
 
i have a RR classic 3.9 v8 with LPG i am paying 57ppl cheepest i could find round here but still lot cheaper the petrol i have had her for a few months and never had any problems dont know if it is single point injection or the new multi point systems, (how can i tell which i have?) but anyway would recommend LPG to any one

WOW! Well thats it LPG, the way forward for me!

Does anyone know of anywhere to go in or near to nottingham??? I dont mind traveling as long as its only an hour or so.

Thanks everone, and its good to hear ( for a change ) that Range Rovers and Money can both be used in the same subject with out it bieng a bad thing.
Saying that i brought my first range rover over a year ago, and ever since ive been skint!

i've got a 4.6 on gas, fitted for £1500 nr Castle Donninton. It was a deal when I purchased the car. All approved etc. Sharldlow Landrover. They might offer a simular deal!
 
Hi Drew I have a 1998 4.6 with 45000 miles I converted to gas about 5 months ago, It cost me £2000 to fit and has been great with no problems so far,
I am paying 49.9 pence a ltr at my local garage near Northampton and I travel around 300 miles a week the tank takes 75ltrs and emptes around 220 miles now I think that is not to bad

i had a 4,0 cherokee converted by shardlow landrover - good installation, no probs - courtesy car etc


they have a p38 lpg'd as a demonstrator i think

get it done

hmm! no question, fit it as soon as you can! i got a 96 4.6 hse and even with K+N induction kit and a de-catt single box exhaust system i get 180 miles around town of £30, whats to think about, go for it!
and i have heard it said that lpg converted engines run slightly hotter, well i been paranoid of my temp gauge after the horror of the engine rebuild so im always looking at it, i know its only an "indicator" but it never moves lpg or petrol!
go for it and with the money you save you can buy us all a beer for the good advice we have offered, LOL!

you wont regret it!

see if they can fit the filler on the rear valance (or what ever it called) under the bumper in the middle, thats where mine is........
 
Good luck it will be fine I converted my 97 4.6 a couple of years ago to the Prinz sequential system have done 45k with no problems with the lpg conversion plenty elsewhere though-enjoy the savings

On my last LPG classic the gas tanks were where the petrol tank used to be and they were surrounded by a huge, great f**k off guard. Can't this be done on a P38?

doensy single point have a diaphram and multi point is more like injection - my single point on my jeep had a round thing with a diaphram in and a vapouriser?
 
If there is a whopping great gubbin between the plenum chamber and AFM, then it's single point. If there are two blocks of four gas injectors on the inlet manifold it'll be multi-point.
