Hi all,

Changed the head gasket on my disco and I want to torque down the rocker shaft nuts and bolts. the book says 5nm then 50 deg.

Im not to keen on buying another torque wrench (mine starts at 20) so I wondered if anyone had any suggestions? or can you get away without using one?

don't want to skimp tho, done a load of work on this disco so if I have to buy one I will..any suggestions on the best one for the money?

Thanks

5nm is just nipped then 50 degrees is just over one flat of the hex bolt, is it not?

well thats what i would do, i was thinking about this today as i was putting my rear diff back in and wondering if i should buy a torque wrench or not, for too long all my bolts have just been tightened to the approved RFT method, hmmmm maybe its time???????

I have a calibrated elbow. When it hurts, the bolt is tight.

Joking aside, I have different torque wrenches for different ranges. I torque virtually everything, certainly anything brake or suspension related.

Finger tight = a few Nm

Hand tight = a few more Nm

Small spanner tight = Quite a few more Nm

Grunt tight = many Nm

Grunt, fart and sweating = lots of Nm

Grunt fart and follow through = tea time.

Hope this helps .. ;)

Yes thanks!..might explain though why every disco I have ever owned has the majority of its nuts and bolts, either nicely rounded off or fooked!

a nip up and 50 deg turn sounds good to me, just wanted to check it wasn't critical that it wasn't done right

Thanks for the replies.
