Hi all,

I'm new to the site.
I bought a 2002 TD5 90 last year and up to now It's been tip top with no worries.

Just recently though, It's developed a quite loud whining noise coming from underneath the gearbox (??) when I try to engage first or reverse gears when it's cold and now it seems to be getting worse. It now happens when the engine is fully warm and I'm releasing the clutch and about to pull away.

Anyone got any ideas what it might be??

I've heard it could be the thrust bearing, or perhaps the spiggot???

Also anyone know of a good specialist LR garage/mechanic in the north kent area??

Many thanks in advance

Cheers.

I'm going to change the oil in the transfer box first. I've heard that Castrol SMX-S is the best one to get??
Anyone agree or got a better idea??

Thanks again

Thats a good start after all i had a similar noise from my t box on a 200 tdi and it turned out it were badly pitted bearings on the input gear if so the are dead easy to check/replace just remove the PTO COVER five 17mm bolts put low r lever .N .Hand brake of and the gear comes straight out P.S FOR GOODNESS SAKE DON'T FORGET TO CHOKE YOUR WHEELS. While in N with H brake of. I was told that CASTROL TAF/X synthetic gear oil is is ok to.

Cheers fellas.

I'm looking at taking your advice and buying a complete kit to replace the lot, while the things up and seperated.
Is there anything else that anyone can think of as well as; Clutch plate, clutch cover, thrust bearing, spigot bearing and replacement oil/washer for the plug???

I'm planning to buy everything I need and then hand it over to someone who can do the job properly.

Many thanks again. This is an excellent website/forum has been really helpful.

Your suggesting he goes to the bother of changing everything else, stripping it all out to the stage of having the clutch plate in his hand and doesn't change it for the sake of £25?

CHANGE EVERYTHING - release/spigot bearing, release fork, plate, cover...

Because of the labour cost/time of getting to these parts you just do it all as a matter of course, all the components in there can wear. You would kick yourself if say the fork collapsed on you in 5000miles because you didn't do it now...
