Loud fuel pump

Hi Everyone,

I'm a relatively new owner to a Td5 Defender 110, I'm loving the thing and getting plenty of work done, however one thing I can't figure out is the
Noisy fuel pump.

Does anyone know what this might be, or a list of things I can start looking at.

Without wishing to sound patronising, It is likley to just be the fuel pump! These have an intank fuel pump that unlike a discovery is audible from inside the vehicle. If everything is working as it should I would not worry about it too much. Aftermarket pumps are louder than genuine. If the noise is new it could be an indicator that it is on its last legs. But it’s only if the noise changes or increases in volume you need to be concerned and a replacement may be in the near future.

The in tank pumps have a fine plastic mesh, when this blocks up they can get noisy, they can also get noisy when they are worn out!

No worries about sounding patronising, at least it gives me a start to have a look.

I've also heard about getting air in the system, could this be a possibility, and how would I go about searching for this?

When the tank has less diesel i'll drop it and have a look at the pump, cheers for the help so far

Is there an access panel in the floor for the fuel pump?
I ask as all the d1 and d2s had said panel.

It doesn't, and i'm not desperate to cut one yet to be honest.

Not on the defenders .. (for some daft reason). we cut a hole in my mates one which was quite successful. If you do have a go @Rudgard measure twice and twice again and dont cut too deep as things are awfully close to the tubs floor pan.

Mine was noisy new and has got quieter.
