Lost Drive

Hi, Guys and Gals, pretty new to the Landy scene, I have a 1972 series 3 88''. My problem is that I have lost drive when in normal operation, but I do have drive when I depress the yellow 4WD lever and also when using the Hi and Low Ratio option, not sure where to start first, but thought with your collective wealth of experience that you might point me in the right direction.

You have likely broken a rear half-shaft in the rear axle.

Put it in high range, let out the clutch and see if the driveshaft to the back is turning even though you're not moving.

Repair is simple though labor-intensive. Source two new halfshafts, gaskets for the drive flanges and a differential gasket, along with sealing felts for the halfshafts and new split pins for the halfshaft to drive flange nuts.

Drive flanges out of the wheels with the halfshafts (you will leak oil). Remove the propshaft, then remove the differential (It's heavy!) . Clean out the diff and the axle housing to get rid of any metal shards, and remove the broen bits of halfshaft from the differential. Remount diff with new gasket, reassemble halfshafts to axle, and refill diff with oil.

You need the ten splin half shafts, not expensive...£12.50 plus shipping from Craddocks. The shaft usually goes at the diff end, you should be able to tap out the broken bit.

Worth pulling the shafts out to see where it's broken in case it's not at the diff and check the splines on the wheel drive flanges aren't stripped.

Hi blue beasty, was thinking about the best and worst scenario, a break away from the diff might be the best result for me, thanks for the heads up re the drive flanges, cheers.

One way to tell on that is just to pop the hub caps at the back and try the drive. If the shafts don;t turn in the drive flange the problem is further inboard.

Good call, BB - I always forget you speed demons in the UK strip drive flanges on a regular basis.
