Don't know if there is a simple explanation to this, but on Sunday, driving back from tenby, I managed to get about 20miles from home, after a 6 hour drive, when I was starting to climb up a bit of a bank in drive, watching the rev counter, and starting to wonder why it hadn't changed up a gear. Before I could do anything about it, there was a massive thud, an orange picture came up on the dash, which looks like the green reverse gear sign, and where it normally comes up by the speedo to show you which gear your in kept flashing and F on there. I was stuck in 2nd gear, in crawl mode in the middle of the bypassed. Managed to nurse it to the tyre place as I was on my way to get a new set of shiny a/t on it, switched it off, started the engine again, and all seemed fine. While it was on the ramp I had a look, and don't know if this is a coincidence, but the back box exhaust bracket had snapped, and thought the thudding was the back box hitting the under side, or the box axle, but doesn't explain the almost shut down, and lack of power. It's starting to worry me a bit Now. Used it to nip to work in today and all seemed fine.:confused::confused:

i would check oil for contamination or blackening if clear pprobably nothing but if oil poor get box looked at sooner than later its often reasonable cheap to repair if not run to destruction,i know an expert with freelander autos whos often helped me with rebuilding them,i could give you his number if needed but could be just a one off

Was it flashing F then 4?

Common thing to look for first is to see if the 2 barrel connectors on the auto wiring harness have come apart. They twist to push together to connect. They're located on the passenger side, above the auto gearbox, behind the passenger headlight, if you look down there. Secured mine below as it's happened to me before.
