Loss of Acceleration - 2008 Puma 2.4tdci

Hi All,

Now it's turned cold, I'm having an intermittent problem with acceleration. Switch on, glow plug light out(twice) and start up, Puma sluggish to fire up, as it's been for last 3 year in winter since bought! (New Bosch battery installed late last year). Idles fine, set off ok, but then when changing gear 1st to 2nd, 2nd-3rd accelerate and nothing for a second, off accelerator then back on and ok. Doesn't happen every time, but am a little concerned it will lack power if needing to turn right at lights or get in a gap in traffic from side road.
Headed over to Mancunia(40 mile run) and a bit hit and miss to motorway, once on motorway all ok running smooth and no problems in 6th. On way back, started engine after 3 hours and ran a little rough. switched off and restarted again all Ok. Intermittent lack of accelerator until Motorway, then no issues all the way home.
Started it up today and slow to start, then pressed accelerator a bit of a flat spot then pick up?
Put my fault code reader on(OBDII) nothing showing, HELP!

Any suggestions on causes, possible (cheap/easy) solutions, would changing glow plugs help????

PS - seem to remember having same issue last winter but only once or twice and been running perfect all this year, touch wood!

Might help the starting issue. Puma is a fly by wire accelerator and there is a sensor on the accelerator pedal, I would start with investigating that. But that should show up on a compatable diagnostics such as nanocom. Best I can suggest is beg steal or borrow a nanocom or similar.
 
Another thing I thought of; if you are not already doing it, fully depress the clutch when you are starting the engine. The clutch pedal has a sensor which communicates with the engine management system and reduces torque when pedal down to aid starting and gear changes.
 
Something else I just thought of; check the fuel filter, if it has not been changed when due it could be corroding and dripping fuel / letting air in. If not leaking, check for water in the filter - there is a screw cap on the bottom of the filter for draining water off.
 
Lots of problems like this over on the Transit Forum with the tdci.

Almost always caused by a faulty TPS. Had two new throttle pedals on my Connect tdci in 80,000 miles, due to similar faults.

Doesn’t explain the poor starting in cold weather, but that could be a separate fault.

Usually caused by defective glow plugs. Mine had that fault (started fine in warmer weather but struggling in colder weather) and three of the four glow plugs were open circuit
 
Thanks Wimblowdriver & Lightning for suggestions and information.

New glow plugs ordered, already have clutch pedal fully depressed and will replace fuel filter, even though not due. Issue did start post an empty to full fill up at Morrisons, taking advantage of the 10p off voucher, which will now cost me the price of a fuel filter, DOOH!

Will check and clean connector to accelerator pedal and hope this resolves problem, fingers crossed. I'll also run Landy with OBD2 reader in place and diagnostic software on mobile running, may help shed some light on issue, if not just connection.

Will also take a look at the Transit forum as little information on the Puma Engine elsewhere. I think it must just be witchcraft that keep the engine running!

Thanks again and will update if I get chance to do it, in between getting lights & baubles up on front of house, racing round buying Christmas presents for kids and tidying up prior to the "Outlaws!" coming over for Christmas Dinner!!
 
Apart from the odd / rare momentary hesitation I've not had any problems with Morrisons diesel. Although the transit has the same engine, it probably has a completely different engine management system, so unlikely to have the same engine management problems (in my opinion).
 
To be fair, always use Morrisons fuel station and have never had a problem, just trying to blame someone, but not my beloved Landy!
 
Update.

Cleaned and reconnected accelerator wiring plug to pedal.

Checked air filter, all OK. Then removed and checked MAF Sensor(Part No.LRO19830) next to filter housing, dirty so cleaned up, sorry forgot to take photo of it pre-cleaning!

Removed and checked MAP/Boost Pressure Sensor (Part No.LR022164), now this was mucky (oily/carbon gunk) and needed a good clean with carburetor cleaner then a small screwdriver to clean in between. Lots of dirt and debris, a bit like charcoal, a little concerned a plastic matchstick sized bit came out, but hopefully its not an important part of Sensor!

Fingers crossed and fire the Landy up......!

All OK, OBDII not showing any fault codes and software graphs showing everything running fine. Accelerator pedal seems responsive with no flat spots? Will take it for a good run tomorrow to check all ok. My only concern is temperature outside is warm and will need to see how it goes when temperature is as cold as when the Landy started playing up. Will keep you posted.
 
Been for a run and filled up, yes at Morrison’s! Had another 10p Off per litre voucher. No issues on the 1.5m run down there, but when I started Landy up on forecourt Temp gauge went through the roof. Now I know there should be no way the Landy has got anywhere near running temperature, but I sh*t myself seeing needle hit the top! Jumped out of car and had a shuftie under the bonnet, engine warm, hoses warm and coolant seemed to be flowing freely. Sat back in Landy turned key to pre-starting position and engine warning light now glowing orange? Checked and pushed in the 2 connectors to the sensors I’d been messing about with, seemed ok and got back in.
Luckily had my tablet on connected to Bluetooth OBDll and this showing coolant temp ok, but did have a fault code U0001 (High Speed CAN Communication Bus) means lost communication, can be voltage or connector issue. Took key out and put it back in again engine management light now off?
I can only presume, unless someone tells me different, that me twitting about with sensors yesterday either I hadn’t pushed connectors in fully or it caused communication issue which hopefully now has sorted itself out??
Now been out for 1/2 hour run and Landy running fine, no warning lights, no loss of power at pick up and gauges on OBDll software seem fine.
Anyone else have suggestions on possible cause?

check relays are tight under drivers seat i had same problem some mornings hard suspension causes relays to jump up
