Hi all

I was just after some advice as what to do as I have just bought a '95 300tdi disco, then this...

It all started with a knocking on full lock from the front. I assumed this was the offside wheel as this is where the sound appears to come from might be the diff. A sort of tock, tock, tock bang!

So I :search:ed and read all I cud find and checked the cv's and wheel bearings on both sides all fine, half shafts all fine too. The wheel would only turn a fraction in either direction so checked that the t box wasn't stuck. It selects all gears fine and even the light on the dash works too!! :)

So now in neutral in all boxes, front offside wheel in the air and still no movement!?? the prop seems to just rock back and forth . Is my transfer box locked even though there is no light? it feels like it goes in to Hi unlocked fine as I get drive then move it to locked light on and drives too. but when I jacked up the wheel with it unlocked (or in neutral) it wont turn. Tried all wheels and same, only a small amount back and forth ( hand brake was released as well ).

There has been some major clunking when pulling away too now and I have lost drive a couple of times, then it finds drive whilst making horrible clunking noises. It feels like it looses gears then picks them up again like broken teeth in a ratchet. Oh and gear box feels sloppier now too :(

My conclusion it that the transfer and front diff are now screwed, What do you think?

If i am putting a new transfer box in is there a better gearbox and transfer off a later model that will fit? And likewise with the diff? Just thinking if I am replacing them what's my best route from here?

thank you for taking time to read my long post looking forward to some sound advice from some people in the know.:D:D

Unlikely that both are knackered. Best to drain front and rear axles and check diffs for bits of broken metal. Likewise for T box, and gearbox. Then you will have a better idea.
