Losing coolant

Well if there is no signs of an obvious leak on the floor or anything obvious like the red dye leaking around a component or pipe I’d be thinking about the possibility of a faulty head gasket. I hope what ever it is it’s an easy fix for you. 👍

Outlet pipe on the head for the top hose can leak. I do believe there are other places in can leak near the exhaust manifold.
Water pump, also a metal coolant pipe along the back of the engine, heater core can also leak.
Just about anywhere really, depends how quick your coolant is going and how much.

My Td5 developed a leak at the back of the engine behind the rotary oil filter. The coolant had a steady slow leak with no obvious signs or overheating. It turns out the head gasket had failed with a very slight leak but the tell-tale orange coolant trail was only visible when I removed the oil filter housing to get it helicoiled.

Boooo… Any other symptoms I could be watching for regarding a head gasket? Is that a fairly intensive fix?

so losing coolant was the only real sign? a side from the gasket, what else is needed when replacing the head gasket? I'm in Canada and have to order my parts in...

I would double check everything else before presuming it's a head gasket, not saying it isn't but best to check first. It won't be cheap if you are paying to get it done.
yeah, i'm gonna go over it for sure. I have a diesel mechanic in the family, so shouldn't have to go to a garage.

Would leaky head gasket cause an unusual exhaust smell? Slightly different than normal sort of thing?

I had mine done by my independent landy specialist. From memory, it was the new head gasket, head bolts and coolant. It was ten years ago and I’ve since sold the disco so haven’t got the exact details.
