MOTOR enthusiasts have been visiting Dalton in droves to catch a glimpse of a mystery car.

Interest in the six-wheel converted camper was sparked after it was featured in the June edition of national magazine Land Rover Enthusiast.

The green machine belongs to classic car lover Bill Cookson, and is parked at Crooklands garage.

Mr Cookson said: “It is the one and only. We have had a lot of people come with cameras. They just peer up on the forecourt, take pictures and pull away again. One guy nearly fell off his bike looking at it the other day.”

Mr Cookson bought the 1964 Land Rover from a friend.

The Land Rover was originally an ordinary four-wheel petrol Series IIA 109, built in Solihull and finished in mid-grey. A top of the range conversion was carried out by Safari Caravans Ltd of Stroud, Gloucestershire, possibly in 1969.

Their name appears on an enamel badge fixed to either side of the body above the doors, but the company is no longer trading. The Land Rover is rumoured to have been converted for a well-known explorer of that era, and is now for sale for an undisclosed sum.

It is parked 'very un loved' in Warrington, at the back of the speed karting track.
