I'm thinking of getting a Freelander 5dr TD4 2000/01 but having read both good and bad reviews with regard reliability I would like to hear your opinions.

Hi, well I took a gamble and bought my 2003 TD4 Auto 5dr from auction for £2800 with 103k on the clock.

It’s done over a 1000 miles in the last few weeks and its averaging 34 mpg and it’s the best car I have ever owned and driven, my wife is constantly trying to get behind the wheel as well. Will my luck continue without any costly repairs, who knows? But I think that applies to any car these days as they are getting so technical. I was going for a Mondeo and another forum put me off them due to door corrosion and other problems. My TD4 just seemed too good a bargain to let pass at auction that day so I bought on a spur of the moment decision and its seems to have paid off.

If I had come here before buying mine I would have run a mile as it’s mostly doom and gloom as people only come here when they have a problem. I am very very happy with mine.

Hi there,

For several years I have always had the impression that any LR brand was unreliable/undrivable and just unwanted.

For some reason though about 2 months ago I bought a 2004/04 Fl TD4 commercial. Going against all my own advice and better judgement I made a snap decision to buy. I then started reading the threads on this and other forums and really started to panic about my purchase!!

It had 12.5K on it when I bought it and I have now added about 8k to that in less than 2 months.

Reliabilty?

So far, so good. Had the MAF changed (dealer paid) through a local 4x4 specialist. Changed the PCV filter, fitted a RoverRon box of tricks, fitted the by-pass EGR and it runs sweet as a proverbial.

All the threads about been unreliable did scare me but please remember that people very rarley post when all is well only when they have a problem or want to vent their anger at land rover etc.

Just do a good test drive and even better an independant inspection and a good warranty.

Steve
