Anyone know if you can get an 8ft length of 2"x2" timber (or similar) in a hard-top 90? (one with the internal divider just reaching up to seat level, not all the way to the ceiling).

I know it won't fit straight forwards-backwards or side-to-side, but I think it might fit on the diagonal, going over the passenger's seat....

I'm working my way towards buying my first defender. Have been to look at a couple of defenders today but forgot to take a tape measure. Would really like the extra space of a 110, but really not sure that it's sensible given the turning circle and a tight, narrow bend on our drive. I'll have a trailer for big loads, so would rather not shell out for a roof rack if one isn't already fitted... but I don't want to have to tow a trailer into town every time I want one little bit of wood!

I don't need to take the missus to fetch wood but if I'm just nipping to B&Q she'll doubtless want to look at paint colours or cushions at the same time! If there isn't going to be space for her she'll doubtless tell me I don't need a defender!

As long as a bit of timber will fit then it'll be fine. If I need more than a bit I'll go to the timber merchants where it's a lot easier to take a trailer!

just stick it out the back door like i used to do, now its a pickup thers no probs , i stick it thru the sliding window and strap it on the back,
 
I think you'd struggle with those lengths of wood myself. You should try and see if you can get a 110 around the bend in your drive, test one out or something. I'd really like a 110 instead of a 90. In fact, I want one AS WELL!
 
Funny, just re-read this exchange from just over 8 years ago... I've had a 110 sat on the drive for nearly 8 years and it's regularly had things strapped to the roof. My kids love it when we do the "fire engine thing" with a couple of ladders. "The missus" has so far resisted all suggestions that she might enjoy the extra fresh air :)

So glad I went for the longer wheelbase 'cos I couldn't imagine a 90 coping with the kids (who didn't exist 8 years ago), dogs and assorted junk! Can't now imagine how people cope with "normal" vehicles - SWMBO was incredibly smug last week when she insisted upon an ikea trip and was watching other folks trying to squeeze their wardrobes/mattresses into tiny boot spaces... one couple were trying to do so when we went in and when we came out nearly 2 hours later, she was still stood there with some items waiting for him to come back for another load (the 3rd!). We gave her a spare doughnut and watched her stuff for her while she popped inside for a wee!
 
I just pull up with me trailer, straight across 4 spaces, load up an entire kitchen, drive off. Can't be doing with the fools in minis jukes etc trying to squeeze 4' wide furniture through a 3'11 boot hatch:mad:

I've often wondered this. I assume they just get stuff delivered?

I've always had big cars - either an estate or a 4x4. The short time period where, due to circumstances beyond my control, my daily drive was a Ford Mondeo Hatchback, led me to swear never again to buy anything that wasn't capable of transporting vast volumes of "stuff".

I haven't had the disco long, but the XC90 I had before could easily swallow whole sheets of plasterboard, long lengths of timber, furniture etc with no trouble at all. The Disco is a bit more of a pain to load due to not having volvo's clever method of making the seats disappear into the floor when folded, but is great for bulky loads - and if we want to move something long and flat we use my wife's volvo estate. When all else fails we can hitch one of the trailers up to either of the cars.

My business partner has a renault megane - its always entertaining watching her squeezing things into the awkwardly shaped boot!
 
Two words for 90 owners - "Roof Rack" You then have almost unlimited load space. Settees, fence panels, 15 foot boards can easily be accommodated by the sky :)
