I know we all know the defender locks are rubbish. But just had a frustrating day trying to replace the door and rear door locks on my 95 300 tdi.

passenger door is fine turn key and it locks and returns key to removal position turn again unlocks.

rear door with lift up handle sometimes locks and allows key removal. Sometimes doesn’t.

drivers door turns beyond point of lock and unlock and often cannot get key out without unlocking.

check locking rods etc all look the same.

they also all move in and out a little

Is it crappy barrels or something else.

You can get replacement lock barrels, they shouldn't be too difficult to replace. There is usually a small hole in the side of the lock area where you can depress a retaining pin and remove the lock. You have to turn the key slightly to line the pin up with the hole.

Hi yes that’s what I was doing replacing the barrels. These are the issues after replacing the barrels

if the levers lose so will be barrel ,but the combination of poor barrels and handles ie too loose a tolerance means loose action with the key, genuine would give best chance
