Can someone help me ? I have put a late 19J TD in my 2a lightweight, I want to use the military oil cooler. There is a feed and return hole in the filter housing but I am not sure which is which !
I presume the cooler is fed at the top and should return throught the bottom but I need to get hoses made up so need to know the route for each.
What happens to the oil level when the engine is started and stopped,
do I need a non return valve in the feed line or a valve or nothing ??

Thanks

As the 19 J ran with an oil cooler in the defenders ( i think ) I thought the turbo needed cool oil, is it optional then ?

General running about plus green laning, the odd towing job ( 1 tonne trailer ) locally, no long hauls to old for that now !

The oil cooler SHOULD be set up with a thermostat controlling HOW MUCH of the total oil flow IF ANY is sent to the cooler.

The MoD Landy models used HUGE oil coolers for special reasons, such as long periods in hot climates with the engine running quite hard, and a risk of over-heating.

Your 19J diesel will NEVER need oil cooled like that, and if you use the big cooler without the thermostat controller thing the engine oil will be OVER-COOLED, which is very bad for the insides of the engine.

If anyone near here wants a huge Lightweight oil cooler I have one here.

Thanks Charles, very helpful, I will probably fit a smaller modern cooler hidden behind the grill and keep the original in place for show I might even not bother with a working cooler as the oils these days seem to cope with most conditions. Your clarification about the army use for the bigger coolers was very useful thanks!
Dont worry about the grumpy I am 48 and my family tell me I am victor meldrew !!!
