i have 1998 300 tdi would like to fit suspension lift kit.is it just a case of bigger springs and shocks or is there other parts to consider.also what heights do these kits come in.thanks.
 
you will need bigger springs, longer shocks, cranked radius and trailing arms, bump stops and extended brake hoses, you looking at around £600 - £800 to do a proper lift, if you just change the shocks and springs chances are things will break, it will handle really badly, have little articulation and maybe tear the brakelines under any articulation.
I would also look into a set of polybushes aswell
 
V8 Disco - I second that

can't see what a lift does for a disco which doesnt spent all of its life offroad ( and I dont mean laning) cos they dont half bugger up the handling and COG.
 
Many people are happy to do a 1 or 2 inch lift without changing the radius and trailing arms. Other things that may/should be needed for lifts are an adjustable panhard rod, and replacement propshafts. Even with a 2" lift I have known many just add +2 springs and dampers, with no appreciable problems, although one person with a bit of a reputation as an aggressive off-roader did pull a brake line apart, but he also regularly drove into trees too.

I would possibly skip polybushes and fit originals if maximum articulation is the name of the game. General chatter seems to indicate the originals are softer and so are less stressed when the axles are waving around, and much longer lasting too. Polys however are usually much easier for the home mechanic to fit.
 
What you actually need is springs and shocks. You only need extended brake lines if you have more articulation; which is no nessacarily the case with some kits. The best (IMHO) for articulation is the ProComp kit, best for longevity is the Old Man Emu springs and shock (OME don't do a complete kit).

Cranked arms front and rear and not nessacary either. I depends on what you are trying to achieve; cranked arms will restore more droop and hence more flex, but then flex is not the panacea that some people think it is.

Don't bother with poly bushes. Competition people have abandoned them and keep with standard LR bushes. Altho I can make a case for SuperPro bushes in the panhard rod if you have a front winch fitted.

What you should consider is some form of castor correction. I would fit and drive the lift kit first and see what effect it has; some LRs are worst than other and not all 2 inch lifts make the steering vague. If you do find you need castor correction then use either corrected swivels or a re-jigged front axle casing; don't waste you time with corrected bushes or arms. You may also get some front prop vibration, but that can be dealt with in time.

Depending in the route you take you could do a 2 inch lift for as little as £350 or as much as £700.
 
iv got a 2 inch lift springs and shocks ProComp.with back cones and 31,10.5,15 tyres, You only need extended brake lines if you have more 2 inch lift, im aggressive off-road will try anythin when at pay n play most iv done is snap a shock, handles well still if not better
 
After all that .. I have HD springs fitted, standard size, but because they're HD they don't sag, so give an effective lift of about 40mm ... damn near 2". No issues with anything really. ;)

Got front pair free off a mate, and rears off ebay for ~£20 ... cheapest lift kit going methinks ... ;)
 
For what it is worth I have a classic RR and had a 2 inch lift fitted which buggered up the handling for no real benefit (although it looked good!), I have refitted standard height.
 
Sorry to bump an old thread but this is relevent to me and better than just starting a new thread for the same response.
I've picked up a set of HD shocks and springs from a V8 i found in breakers, looks to be a 2" lift as well.
Gonna replace both front shocks as one was bent in a accident, but i've got a complete doner truck that i've just stripped the front axle off (back coming off too), my plan is to clean it up paint it and generally get as much done to it then just replace my axle.

Was going to get polybushes however after reading this thread i'm not so sure. Looking on foundary4x4 i've found various standard bushes but i'm not sure which ones i should go for. Sorry my LR knowledge is still basic which ones should i get?

Also who sells the brake lines? ebay listings are confusing and don't seem to say if there standard or extended.

One more, i'm also fitted the gearbox, transfer box and props from the doner, is there anyway of figuring out which UJ's if i don't have the correct chassis number?

im getting my 2 inch lift tomorow hopefully, terrafirma kit. As i have managed to get stuck on a few obstacles where a lift kit would have helped me get out. As i was beached on the chassis with the wheels just about nipping the floor
 
Well i already have a lift and my standard suspension is shagged so its going on lol.
Think i'm not sure about is whether to fit standard or polybushes and what ones i should replace. Oh and where to get a set of extended brake lines from.

any 4x4 shop and many websites or ebay have extended brake lines, people seem to be saying standard LR bushed last longer that the poly ones, and replace as many as you can
 
cheers for that mate, i had also read that LR bushes seem to last longer, though the listings for them do seem to be very confusing, so many different sets.
I'll look into the brake lines a bit more and try to find a set of extended ones, take it i need front and back?
 
Cheers for that mate. But i'm still a little confused, my 300tdi has two hoses at the front on each side and it doesn't have ABS. But the kits are for either 3 or 5 hoses. Which set do i need?

..... and how many at the rear?

You need a 5 hose set. There's a single flexy hose at the rear, the 'solid' bits go along the axle and into the calipers, different to the fronts .. ;)
 
Scrapped my spares Disco today and took the rear axle off, see what you mean now, 4 at the front and one at the rear.

My new front shocks arrived yesterday with new bushes. Still trying to find the rest of the bushes, loads on ebay just difficult to tell between OEM and pattern stuff.
