Here is apparently a rare case according to land rover dealer, I got my 96 range rover 4.6 hse 3 wks ago, got into the car today after work and the rear view mirror had liquid murky coloured at the bottom of the mirror inside the glass i looked down at the dash and some type of oil had dripped onto the plastic i rubbed it off and to my horror  it had melted the surface of the dash i located the leak it was dripping from the underside of the rear view mirror near the auto button. I called the dealer and he said in the workshop they had never seen that problem ever. has anyone heard of this before? what will it cost to replace? and does anyone know what the fluid would be thats burning the dash? any feedback would be greatly appreciated:D

hello mate my hse 4.6 97 my did exactly the same 3 mths ago during a very hot spell of weather , same as you i was gutted it dripped onto the radio display and marked it and also a bit of the centre console above the radio , worst of all it splashed onto the gearleaver ivory leather knob and marked that BUGGER!!!!!!!!! .
not sure on cost but replacement is simple enough , i dont use it that much i tend to use the door mirrors more .
rick.

cheers for the knowledge that it can happen it didnt leak anymore over night today the oil is in middle of reflection instead of at the bottom car is under warranty few things gone wrong so Im gonna get an rac inspection and hand the car in to get all these problems sorted soon I hope if the garage will sort it.
Inspection will cost me 280.00 but will cost that in fuel travelling 60 miles to the garage all the time

How much for a mirror?
hold on to something solid............ or sit down,
£154 from main stealer.

i was lucky and got one for £46... and the garage who had my r/r for 10months paid...
mine also did the same, its the electro chromatic material that leaks out, looks like oil and it melted a bit of my dash too.
main dealer wont se it as by thetime there old enough for this to happen people are prob getting them serviced by people who dont charge stupid money. (IE £40 an hour, not £100)
there was post on another forum, someone went back to the original manufactures of the mirror in Holland and got replacement for free.. cant remember the name now so have a close look on your mirror for a dutch looking name and google it, you may be lucky.
the oil stuff is tungsten oxide i think

get onto rangerover.net- search on rearview mirror, some guys have contacted the manufactuer of the mirror and they have sent out replacements!
