Leaking PAS Box

Hi box has been leaking now for about a month & I am going through about a litre a week of PAS fluid. Ive tried the sealant with no luck & have now decided its time for a 2nd hand / reconditioned one.

Lots on ebay would just like people's thoughts on a 2nd hand one as they are about half the price of a reconditioned one.

Obviously I know people are going to say buying the cheaper one will certainly run the risk of leaking at anytime but there is a few out their that are being sold by reputable ebayers which state their boxes have been tried & tested & are leak free, they have sold hundreds of 2nd hand parts & not had 1 returned.

As mentioned buying the cheaper one I would run the risk of a leak happening at any time but this would be very bad luck on my case if I did not get a while out of it.

In the meantime what's the chances of adding a bit of break fluid in with the next lot of PAS fluid to help stop the leak just to tie me over until I do eventually get some sort of box...........

Hi,I have a leaking PAS box not leaking much fluid but noticeable.I have seen seal kits on eBay does anyone know if it's worth going down that route rather than buying another box.

Go ahead replace the seals and you may find there's still a leak because the output shaft is worn.

depends ive successfully resealed hundreds ,but equally if shafts grooved and pitted it wont last too long , you need to check shaft condition where seal contacts, reseal can be done with box in situ as long as you can remove drop arm, you remove circlip and place a container under box ,then start engine and turn wheel to full lock it should blow seal and steel backing washer out

Reading posts and other sites it seems a Recon box can last as long as replacing the seals.is the shaft replaceable.

was replaceable but cost made it uneconomic,hence most recons dont have new shafts, you can get seal repair sleeves

I think I will give the seal kit ago and go from there,then I can see what condition the shaft is in.

I tried it. Found it to be a waste of money. Better putting the cash towards a new box

Makes me wonder about this. How many other vehicles, LR or not, have a shaft with a seal on it for various use, not just steering, that last for years and years. Some with heavy use. Why does the LR pas box leak so easily and wear the shaft. Is it just ****? Or are the seals crap? Just wondering

they very often do last for many years,its usually age or off roading that causes it ,

On my Disco 2 it went at the output seal at 50k odd miles. Replaced with a refurb and is leaking again at 89k. The one on the 90 is tight as a drum. Its a puzzle to me how some go and some don't. seems to be more common on Disco's. Perhaps more strain on it somehow.

bigger wheels ,turning whilst stood add extra stress, disco 2 box often reseal well, but no seal exposed to the elements lasts forever

Exposure is a good point. Nature of the beast I suppose. I have a new seal there ready to try in it. Worth a go before spending big bucks on another box.

Are these seal repair sleeves easily available,would this be used in a recon box.
I have seen a Aussie guy on YouTube rebuild one and it's not a difficult job,with a sleeve would you need a different seal kit.

had similar problem 3yr ago,not quite as bad. Added 2 bottles of LUCAS steering add and it slowleydried up and passed every M.O.T.since [w.w.w.LucasOil.com]
