right so ive a 2005 facelift free lander, when its realy cold i hold ignition on 10 secs glow plug comes on and it starts (little smokey), drive a mile or 2 and stop it, when go to start glow plug light dont light and it crank and cranks sometimes up to 10 times before it goes.

Also sometimes on warmer mornings but car stood over night it cranks and cranks 10 times or more then starts and runs lumpy for 20 secs and has clouds of white diesel smell smoke to rear?

done so far.

New glow plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oil change and filter, new bmw replacement filter breather thing, full code read and diagnostic (no fault codes present)

thanks, :)

after a mile or two .. i wouldn't expect the glow plug light to come on .. when re-starting ..

if it has a hard time starting when engine is warm ..
it could point to a duff camshaft position sensor ..
to see if that's the case .. it's possible to put the sensor in a fridge to cool it down ..
then try a restart .. if it starts ok .. that would indicate the camshaft sensor has failed ..

although i don't know IF a duff cam sensor would produce lumpiness and white smoke ..

another thing to check would be the fuel-rail pressure sensor
they are known to suffer moisture ingress causing corrosion on the plug-pins
and cause all sorts of strange symptoms ..
try cleaning the connector pins ( and smear some 'contralube' on them ..
Contralube | Contralube 770 .. available from Maplin stores )

could be a duff injector ..
try some injector cleaner .. like 'diesel rhino' ( google it )

more info re td4 faults here:
ROVER 75 MGZT ENGINE FAULT FINDING

could be the low pressure fuel pump on it's way out
( usually last 70 to 100k miles )
although that would show up at higher rpm i would think ..
i.e. the rpm hit a brick wall even in lower gears ..
