I'd say that depends on what you're going to be doing with it. You'd probably have a better chance of getting a half decent early Disco 3 than you would a late Disco 2, especially around the back end cross member of the D2.
Having said that, the D2 has marginally fewer electric systems and IMHO is a better looking 4x4 vehicle. It has been said that the Disco 2 was the last Land Rover which you could fix at the side of the road with a hammer and a ball of bailing string.
Regarding the mechanicals, I can't comment on the TDV6 lump since I only have experience of the Td5.

Many thanks will print this off and take it with me when looking at a D3...Andy

D2 are simpler, cheaper to buy, cheaper to work on, later D3 expensive tax.

D2 chassis rust
D3 eats suspension bushes

Both are VERY capable off road
Both sound very good for Diesels

My advice is work out your budget and take it from there.

Under £4000 D2
Over £7000 D3

I bought a D2 as D3 were not cheap enough but I do not regret it at all.

I prefer D3 styling to D4, but D4 is a better drive.

At least you get to chose between the best vehicles in their class.

good advice there :)

ref the bushes , see that many are now fitting the range rover sport bushes , supposed to last a lot longer

I would buy a d3... Nothing wrong with the d2 though beautiful engine but old and you will stuggle to find a solid one
