Hi fellow Disco'ites,

EGR now removed, Mike coming from Dynachip to "enhance" the Disco2 performance next week.

Now, Has any one taken the third step and fitted an oversize intercooler. Did it have a noticeable effect, was it value for money. I read of large power gains by fitting these things.

Another point would be, if Dynachip up the perfprmance, would it be wise to add further power by fitting the said intercooler. Last thing I need is to blow the engine into bits.

ideally you would fit the intercooler prior to the mapping so the map could be set up to suit it,
the cooler does make a difference, but then again the map makes more of a difference, I have the re map and intercooler on mine, but i doubt the cooler gives the 30-40bhp gains they quote
 
yes, i did it and it worths every penny of it... IMO any remap is just half job without a larger intercooler, i dont even recommend a 'stronger' remap without it...i have had the remap before the intercooler and i felt the difference... the maps are standard you cant make adjustments on them so if you choose an agressiver map you'll deffinately need the intercooler too

well, i was looking into it before i had mine done, then as said re map to suit new intercooler!, mike told me when he was re mapping mine it doesn't make much difference, factory fitted cooler is more than adequate for a standard remap, his exact words 2 weeks ago, i was going to do it whole hogg, but thought bugger it as i only do 3- k a year in it, not worth the expense, but the remap every penny! you can go on for ever spending on these, but there is a limit!

afaik with any management power tuning you need a better heat dissipation otherwise there are various risks which you'll realise just when it's already late IMO... it doesnt make much difference for the remap itself but it will make a huge difference for the engine and it's components... it'll kill more often the turbo hoses the MAP/IAT sensor and if the remap is a higher(sport) stage you can have all kind of problems on a long run due to the extra heat and boost which has nowhere to dissipate... it would be interesting to make a poll about how many of the vehicles which suffered by cracked heads or HG failures had a remap without larger intercooler :rolleyes:
An intercooler's primary function is to cool the charge air after it has been heated due to boosting and the heat that is produced by the turbo before sending the air into the engine. As the air is cooled, it becomes denser, and denser air makes for better combustion (more power). Additionally, the denser, cooler air helps reduce the chances of knock.
so you improve the fueling by using an upgraded map but you kill the combustion with warmer air... think about that

Before you go spending all your hard earned money on a specific td5 disco one, have a look at the the one I just brought.

It was a custom one on eBay for about £130 and I made it fit :) mine is a custom car but I am sure you can do something similar!

Hi Phil, I've had a TD5 re-mapped by Mike and all I can say is that with the re-map (no replacement intercooler) I had all the power I needed in any circumstance, including towing up hills.

If you drive like I do, broadly keeping to the speed limits and with mechanical empathy, you'll never have a problem with a re-map. Let's face it for most of the time the engine is running well within it's capabilities.

But just occasionally, when you want to overtake something for example, you plant your right foot and she's off like the proverbial scalded cat (in relative terms you understand).

So to summarise: re-map on it's own? Beneficial - Yes! Safe - Yes!

If you've got a spare £532.00 inc.VAT for an Allisport intercooler, then go for it. I didn't.

I personally would not recommend a DIY approach as I do not believe it is possible for the DIY-er to achieve safe, calibrated results. Do it properly or leave it alone.
