Hi

I was considering buying a diesel Land Rover Discovery probably pre 1994 is
what I can afford. This is for a second car in the family and more for fun
than an everyday run about. Can anybody tell me the main faults to be aware
of, and is it easy for the DIY man to repair the various main faults. I am
reasonably adept at car repair.

Regards Dave

As you've given up the idea, telling you that alt.fan.landrover is just
over there ----> is a waste of time.

Like us all, old age eventually beckons and bits start falling off, get
stiff or less stiff in some cases and things just don't work as they used
to. Also all kinds of odd problems crop up in old age, some of them could
turn out to be terminal. Oldies don't figure very high on the lists for
heart transplants.

easy vehicle to work on, parts are common and fairly cheap. Check for
rust on sills and wheel arches, generally the chassis is okay. If you
are looking at 1994 models, you may get an early 300 TDi, if so ensure
that the cam belt mods have been done, and change the cam belt
immediately. 200 TDi engine is good for high mileage, I know several
of these that have reached 300k with no major work.

LT77 gearbox can be prone to mainshaft wear, but is an easy fix,
exchange boxes can be got for less than £500 if you know where to
look.

I have 2 200TDi Discos, think they are great!

You specifically say 200 tdi. Is the 300tdi not as good then?

I bought a new 1991 200Tdi and was most pleased with it. A very capable
vehicle.

The 300 Tdi was an improvement, but a large number (check VIN elsewhere) had
problems with the rubber timing belt. They were not shimmed correctly.

I sold my Disco 200Tdi in 2003 having bought a new 2002 Td5 Defender 130.
The Td5 has a chain, replacing the belt.

Buying any ?00 Tdi, without good details of when the belt was changed,
requires an immediate change. The previous owners may not have changed it
when they should.

If changed at the service one before recommended by Land Rover, gives piece
of mind.

Alan

The Td5 is even better, unless you travel a lot in water. My Td5 would
loose it's ECU, if I used it like my 200Tdi in water.

*any* car I buy with a belt instead of chain normally has a cambelt
change within a week of purchase. Gives me piece of mind....
