Hi,
I am contemplating buying a grey-import Landcruiser. I know that the BJ74
was sold in Australia by Toyota however the local models seem to have
relatively high mileage and poor levels of specification compared to the
Japanese models. Has anyone purchased a grey-import BJ74? What has been
your experience with regards to servicing and repairs?

My main concern at the moment is the vehicles 24-volt electrical system as
the Australian delivered models were all 12-volt. I believe the same motor
(13-BT) was used in the local delivered models; was this engine used in any
24-volt applications in Australia (Dyna/Coaster)? Are there many parts
(besides electrical components) that won't interchange between the
Austrailan and Japanese delivered vehicles?

No need for the usual rif-raf about buying grey-imports (I'm well aware),
only information specific to BJ74's is required.

Thanks in advance,
David

I believe the 24 volt system is the 'arctic pack'. I owned one in Canada,
and it WAS a relatively big pain in the arse. Nothing fits 'off the shelf',
and simple things like blinkers or brakes require a trip to the Maritime
shops (boats apparently are 24 volt too). All except the headlights which
remain 12 volts - oh, and the radio too.

Seriously, it is a very annoying part of owning a 24 volt vehicle, but if
you can get over it, it is probably well worth it.

Hi Ian,
Was only the electrical system annoying or were there engine components etc.
that were hard to come by?

Thanks,
David

I'd never want to miss my 24 Volts L/C. My 8274 pulls the **** out of it all.
You can't get more power out of a car on the 'electric' way. The usage of
'truck' parts for the electrics ain't much of a problem, no defects yet but
every truckshop can cope.

Greez,

Axel

Parts seemed readily available, but you would have to specify what you
wanted. I think you're in Australia, in which case you would possibly have
to 'wait' until the item was imported.
