Hi all

I was inspired to ask this from another thread on the forum.

We always talk about the bad side of our vehicles and how often it breaks down, but there must be some reliable Land Rovers out there!!!!!!

Well i'll start....

I have had my 95 defender 90 for 2 years now, and to put it into one word 'Fantastic!'. It has never let me down (im touching wood while typing this!)! The only thing I have had to replace is a drop arm balljoint because the rubber split. Oh and i have had two punctures in six months:eek: .

But thats it!

Can anybody else beat this??

Oh also, it doesnt drop any oil at all! (it must have run out..defenders bleed!)

Lucky buy i reackon;)

Jim

Hi there, I've not done too bad with mine. Its a '97 300TDi 90 and I've had it for 4.5 years and no problems at all..........yet. Although when I bought it, it had only done 18,000 and is still on only 39,000 so it's hardly worn in yet!!!

XHere's hoping I haven't put a jinx on him X

i have had my discovery 300tdi nearly 4 years its done 123000, i got it on 96000 just done normal bits like exhaust and bulbs, but its serviced every 6months or 6k and i do expect the odd thing just had to do rear door solenoid but the car is 9 going on 10 years old so i expect things to wear out i love my 300 to bits so does family,i can get a disco 2 about 2002 plate for about 9k with full service history about 36k on the clock do i want 1 yes will it be just as reliable NO, so thats why i stick with my 300,tiga

I bought my Disco 300tdi new in 1997, despite some 'friends' in the motor trade telling me they are very unreliable. 8 years and 85,000 miles later it's still going strong. It's had a hard life compared to those Chelsea Tractors, but I use it as God intended it to be used.
It's failed to start twice in that time, once due to a seized alternator bearing (repaired at roadside whilst under warranty), the 2nd time was about 2 years ago when the fuel injection side of the immobiliser packed in, sorted out a couple of days later by local dealer.
It's on it's 3rd set of tyres, 2nd exhaust, 2nd battery. I do all service work myself since warranty expired. I plan to keep it for a few more years yet, people ask me if I'm bored having the same car for so long, NO WAY I tell them, they don't realise what they are missing. I love my landy!!!!:D

some are lucky......

I currently drive a 2001 Disco 2 TD5, I have had it from new, and now covered 98000 miles. Only problem was with auto gearbox recording a fault and going into get home mode. If turned off engine wait about an hour start up again no problem. Dealer never found problem. Was discussing with Land rover Assist guy, while waiting for a towtruck for wifes Freelander, and he knew the problem and the solution, earth strap from battery to bodywork, unboled from bodywork and removed paint. Problem solved.
Prior to this had a 1999 Disco 2 TD5 manual, did 95000 miles without a problem.

Have to agree with Fired-up's original post.

Nelly, my 84' - III hasn't let me down yet. 300 miles on two consecutive w/ends + all in between (which has included a couple of 130 mile round trips to work) & she hasn't missed a beat. I confess, we've only done around 2000 miles together in the last 2 months or so since I entered the murky world of Landy ownership, but I was expecting at least a problem or two from what I'd read here, there & elsewhere &............touch wood, nothing. Faultless behaviour (oh, except for the washer bottle, short out, bubble bath windscreen episode mentioned elsewhere on this forum that kept me endlessly amused on a rainy day)...........I think it's more a reflection of the English "psyche", that "we built it, therefore it's going to break.....regularly" mentality, the one downmanship that we seem to be so good at that brings it on.............OK, OK, we're pretty good at 4X4's, but we only play football, cricket & invent legal systems so that the rest of the world can learn/adopt them & then thrash our sad asses with them !

Where would a forum like this be if we all said "Landies rok & whoever says otherwise is in for a serious beating............oh yeah, sorry, we'd vote for someone called Bush & look really foolish on the world stage.

Can't remember what percentage it is of the Worlds population that see a Land Rover before they see any other vehicle, but it is hooooge! (the ones that see Toyotas first usually see rockets in the back & that ain't no recomendation!)

The point? For all their apparent faults, Landies have a lot going for them & yes, we should enjoy that...............& come Armageddon (thanks Morrisey) we'll be the one's towing the whales.................& the politicians back into the cold deep water!

Hmmmmm?
Marcus.

done 20,000 miles (up to 114,000 now) in my p38 range rover 4.0 and its never let me down. So far i've replaced shocks, battery, blend motors, condenser and drag link. fantastic car

Im thinking of replacing my battery as it is beginning to turn over quite slowly in the mornings. Imagine how suprised i was when i saw it was the original land rover battery complete with the original batch date on it.

Not bad 10 years out of a battery

Nearly 200,000 mile on my 93 Disco and only thing that has let me down without warning in the last few years was a clutch failure back in January, it had lasted 4 years since I changed it before.

My 01 Freelander 1.8 has been very reliable so far. Although it has always been critised for poor reliability, i still went out and bought one. I drive average 1500 miles a month and even driving at 90+mph on motorway (rev @ 5000rpm) i haven't had any problem yet (touch wood). Only thing i am not happy about is it doesn't have 6th gear!!!

my R reg 110 County was 96k miles young when I got it, apart from the internal condensation which lead to a slightly musty smell and the fairly inadequate heating system it was the best(the one I have felt most connection with) motor I have ever owned - it went down the road with someone else driving it in Jan as I was redundant and needed the cash - worst mistake I ever made. My Series III keeps me in touch - as the weather has really taken a turn the doortops went on yesterday.
Over the last four years of owning Defender and Series it is now obvious why we all wear coats and hats!

take care,

tom
