Hi all

Due to not having 50 posts yet i cant start a thread in the wanted section ( apologies admin )

Before i go and spend £103 on a diesel/ water separator that lives along side the remote pump and filter does anyone have spare that i could buy as the Mrs Freelander has decided to suck in air for some bizarre reason

What was the problem?

it was the ABS that caused “ the three amigos “ to illuminate, in regards to the vehicle not starting we think somehow there was an issue with the hose connections on top of the separator that was allowing air to enter ( daft as it sounds as there was no fuel leak ). It was all cleaned and re-connected and is running perfect. Two new rear tyres this week to sort and front discs and pads before it’s MOT Saturday. We are certain to look after both the Freelander and Disco as we’ll renew them both in 12-18 months

I guessed so.
Two new rear tyres this week to sort
Make sure you get new rear tyres that match what is on the front. The freelander is really fussy about tyres, so all need to be identical, and the least worn must go on the back.

I've heard about this tyre issue but for the uneducated why is this so?

We've notice the rears are worn more so than the front what exactly causes this? I think it could be a mix and match but within six weeks it'll be on four matching its on 17" btw

It's a design of the viscous coupling drive system used. Tyre maintenance is in the owners handbook, but few people read that, and tyre places don't know or give a ****.

They don't. The front tyres wear twice as fast as the rears, so someone has swapped them about, which is bad.

I think it could be a mix and match but within six weeks it'll be on four matching its on 17" btw
That's not ideal, as it put huge strain on the IRD.
 
Hey Andy, I've got a Freelander 1 TD4 and I have replaced my pump and filter recently. However I have rough start ups and then stalls intermittently. I have opened the valve at the bottom of the water seperator and drained it alot, except it kept coming and didnt stop, I did this before doing the pump and filter and just like now, it starts fine without hesitation. Would you say this is similar to your issue? and would you say replace it?

We ended up completely removing the separator degreasing it all and cleaning it all out. We suspected at the time that it sucked in some air somehow through the hose connections on top. After it was all checked and re-checked including fuel lines and injectors it miraculously started and even now today it starts first time no hesitation. I'd say yes sounds like a similar issue i had in relation to replace it try and remove it first like i did and clean it out

Thanks for getting back to me, a lad I know in one of the freelander FB groups has a similar issue and has been watching closely the things I've been doing to improve my 15 year old FL 1, and we both have done the emptying of the separator, so he has a local breaker that he got one for £20 off and I've gone for a new one from Rimmer Bros for £109. That way I dont need to go back under that flipping arch until the car dies. 94k on the clock at 15 years old, I'm not quitting on it for a while. Anyway, the lad is going to fit his first and let me know how he gets on and I'm going to do what you did and remove the old one and clean it before having to fit the new one. If it works perfectly I can send the new one back.

I've had mine apart and cleaned. can see 2 rubber o rings in the hose female connector. One seems a little smaller than the other. But I dont get how it can be causing the intermittent start stall. What else did you check? Sorry to pester.
