Hello everyone,

I have a Series 3 2.25 petrol SWB with overdrive, I was talking to someone the other day who had converted his 2.25 petrol Series 3 with a Turner Performance cylinder head and SU carb, and was claiming he was getting 25 mpg.

I know the bores etc will need to be in top condition, but is this achievable? Also has anyone any thoughts on electronic ignition conversions?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I've had just shy of 23mpg out of mine. It had electronic ignition & new coil, 'performance exhaust' weber carb, kenlowe fan and was on mud tyres. This was at a steady 56mph most of the time on the A1. With road tyres I'm sure it could have been better. My ignition was from 'simonbbc' and I was very happy with it.

I had a 2.5 petrol in my 90 and it was thirstier than me on a sunday morning! Performance isn't my top priority I'm just after improving economy. I know if you want high mpg don't have a petrol Landy, but the price of juice these days makes it worth looking into.

Charlieccu's set up sounds interesting, mine has a weber carb too but is standard in all otherways and is doing about 18mpg. Anything over that I can get - without spending a fortune - would be a real do.

Hi Davecoaches, Mine was also on overdrive. Google search 'simonbbc' for ignition. I'm not sure the exhaust made any difference, I only used it cos it was stainless. The motor passed away when I changed the cylinder head and it was very slightly warped... It now has a 200tdi, just shy 34mpg on a similar trip!
