land anchor tow bar alternatives.

Hello chaps,

Now i can't rule ou that i am a complete pleb. but a cannot find a thread on alternatives to the land anchor that is my towbar. my 90 has the standard tow bar and it grounds out all the flamin time. i don't tow anything and have very little experience rescuing stuck vehicles. i was wondering if there is a good alternative to the tow bar. both for recovery and being recovered. i know jate rings and shackles are options but was wondering if they would limit my ability to recover others.

Look at the terrafirma receiver hitches. Leaves a 2" box hole with a removable tovar plate which can utilised for other things too. It keeps it up out the way if you wanna do a bit of off reading too. I'm thinking of changing my Dixon bate to one of these.

there ok but they need rubber bungs as they fill up with **** and corrode,
boss got 1 on his disco few years back and swapped it back to dixon bate,

rekon there best on chelsea tratters not mud buses..

Mine doesn't ... and I do use it in mud .. a lot!!

I welded one of these into my cross member. Seems good so far, and there are a number of different attachments for it. drop plate for tow bar, recovery shackle, winch.

But it could fill up with mud so will need cleaning out now and then, or use the plug as suggested.

Or get a decent solid/capped one that doesn't need a plug ..

Can't recall who made it but it only cost £75 new off ebay, including the towing drop plate. Made the recovery shackle bit myself, with the help of my bro.

I used a couple of jate rings at the back and it did for what I needed when off road. Cheap, easy to fit and no cleaning required. Like everything its how much you need it compared to money and effort.

Yeah that's the best bet, I welded a steel plate over one end to cap it off, and use a warn 2" receiver plug in the other end.

Unless you feel the need to go ploughing, I should avoid a DixonBate like the plague. Really like Paul D's hitch, though........

thanks for all the suggestions gents. i quite like the look of the interchangable jobbie. another present to myself is in order i think!

If all you want it for is recovery then get a NATO hitch, you already have the holes for it in your crossmember, all you need is a spreader plate either side, got mine off e-blag for it£20ish.
