Hi guys and girls, the brake pedal from hell comes to haunt me, after issues with brake fade from new discs and pads, had them replaced now it stops very well, but now the pedal creeps and I get that sinking feeling, my question is, would this be air in the system, pedal is hard with engine off, if I hold the brakes on and start the engine the pedal travels 3-4 inches then goes spongey, can someone put me in right direction, thanks

Hiya

good that the discs and pads are now sorted out

assume before the brakes worked fine with no excessive brake travel , so does sound like air in the system

let the new garage who done ur disc fix it , as if air has entered the abs module that needs diagnostics for a bleed process

Hi, I have just today booked in with brake specialist, need this sorting once and for all, I explained the work that has been done and they are confident the can put it right, they are going to do full brake strip and bleed, best put my big pocket trousers on.

shame you’ve had to do this considering the first garage created this mess

hopeful ur be able to get some money back from them, when I done my brakes I have used a vacuum pump but did take a few goes before I got all the air out

but have heard if air gets the ABS module can be a right sod to get out

Plse let us know how it goes

Yes sure will booked in for Thursday, if I have learned anything from my experience it's specialist for each job a lot off garages don't have the correct equipment to do all cars,

cheers, will be interesting to see what they find

must admit 95% of the work I do myself , along with help from the forum over the years , bought my D3 nearly 4 x years ago and knew nothing about them but within that time gained invaluable Information and to be honest I wouldn’t be able to afford having the disco if I had to rely on garages

don’t forget theres always plenty here to help if u ever get stuck

I would have done this work myself but have no garage or drive plus it's cold out there, think this would have got me stumped , I will all be good one way or an other.

on the plus side I'm getting 23mpg the down side these horses have not stretched there legs for a couple of weeks .

Hiya. Have you checked Regional LZers , to ask if anyone knows a good, indy, LR garage, near you?
That would save you having to look for different specialists , every job. Oh and 'near' is relative. Takes me over 2hrs, on a good day to get to mine, but they are worth it.

This will be my plan for future repairs, I found out the hard way through cost and inconvenience.

I know this issue has been going around (the world), for many years now, but this is the first time, I’ve encountered it.
Recently replaced the ‘Master Brake Cylinder’, all four discs, pads and callipers, on my wife’s LWB 2005 Defender, TD5 .

Bled the brake system and the brakes were fine with the engine off, (pedal rock hard), however, once the engine was started the brake pedal would creep to the floor, under medium foot pressure. After many attempts of ‘pedal’ and ‘pressure bleeding at 20psi’ there was unfortunately, no change.

I then decided to try the use a vacuum pump. First, I removed the pipe for the ‘front left’ wheel on the ABS modulator, then connected the vacuum pump with an improvised link consisting of a brake pipe fitting, copper pipe and clear neopreem tubing. Being lucky enough to have a ‘nanocom’, I activated (alternately), ‘Front Left Inlet Valve’ and ‘Front Left Outlet ‘Valves, whilst the vacuum pump was activated. Shortly after a continuous stream of bubbles were drawn from the abs modulator!
I then went on to peddle pump bleed the system in the ‘normal’ way and hey presto!
Sinking peddle sorted!!

My view maybe wrong, but peddle and pressure bleeds are fine, as long as the brake fluid remains in the system. Once fully drained, you will need a vacuum pump to clear air from the ABS Modulator.
Bex.
