Help please.
Series 3 swb 2300 cc Petrol. Replaced rear main oil seal no leak. New genuine clutch plate fitted. Everything fine for 3 weeks. I now have a knock at idle. Seems to be loudest at sump and bell housing. took sump off, stripped oil pump working fine, checked crank for play etc all seems fine. Anybody got any ideas. I can drop gearbox as I’ve got removable crossmember being fitted next week.

Get yourself a mechanics stethoscope. Should be easy to locate the right spot as you are lucky that it does this at idle, it means you can crawl all over the thing until you find where the noise is coming from. Is it ONLY at idle?

If you have an engine lifting eye on the back of the cylinder head check its not loose or fell off and sat on the bell housing if not check nothing else is catching anything

Check the engine and gearbox mounts anorl.

One could be loose. Or missing. Or never replaced. Or upside down or........

Not that I have ever done anything like that

Thanks for replies chaps. (Chaps where did that come from.) lads. I put new tdi mounts on. Less vibration. Yesterday I took rocker off and checked gaps. Minor adjustment on 2. While I had the rocker off I had her running. I’m not sure but didn’t sound right to me wasn’t consistent enough tappity Tap. if you know what I mean. (May be just me). I’m not a mechanic.

Yes seems to be only on idle. I didn’t want to take her for a run out just in case. Maybe I should chance it.

I think you need to locate the source of the noise before you chance anything else. You could always use a long screwdriver or a steel tube as a listening tool, one end against your ear and the other against various spots on the engine and gearbox.

Took spark plugs out back plug cross threaded. Presume when I sent head to be painted. Could this be the cause if not seated properly.

Yes, it might rattle or chuff if very badly fitted. You can run a tap down the thread, it might restore it ok, put grease in the swarf channels of the tap to catch the swarf. Is that the source of the noise or is this just a theory?
You will appreciate how difficult it is for us to diagnose a fault from a post: "my Land Rover is making a noise". All we can do is make suggestions as to what it might be and tease out details as we go along.

I do appreciate it’s difficult not seeing or hearing the engine. it’s a process of elimination as always. It’s all a learning curve as I’m learning about things as I go along. Fortunately I have a decent garage and plenty of tools. I’ll keep you updated. Once again thanks for the feedback. I almost did a 200 tdi conversion but I do like the little engine. Although 12-14 to the gallon is rubbish.

There is only one course of action open to you: find the noise yourself with a listening tool. That's what I would do, it's what any mechanic would do in the circumstances. All any of us here on the forum can do is make suggestions as to what might be the source but none of us can know without getting our hands on the Land Rover.

I agree: 12 - 14 mpg is rubbish, you should be getting more than that. What colour are the plugs or have you got a heavy foot?

Damaged plug threads are a pain, very easy to cut the new thread wrong and end up in a worse mess, take your time making usre its square. Try and get your hands on a reverse tap, they expand into the thread and cut on the way out.

I don't think I would muck about cutting a new thread, too many things to go wrong. I'd get a garage to retap and fit a helicoil.

Depends on how bad it is to begin with, if it just needs chasing up, then try tapping it. I'm not a fan of Helicoils for things which will be coming in and out a lot like spark plugs. (There is or was) a better alternative for plug holes, a complete steel insert that could be let in with a flat surface on the outside. I remember seeing them on VW air-cooled engines.
