I've been told there's a guy in Northants / Lincolnshire who will do a re-chassis, but is happy to reduce the price significantly if you help / provide the labour.

I'm based in Kent, and am wondering if there's anyone offering a similar service down here?

My 18yr old son and I have a Defender 90 that needs a re-chassis, I'm slightly nervous about starting it / biting off more than we can chew on our own, but if there's someone experienced who we could pay to do it WITH us, then we're very keen to learn / be involved as much as we can. Perhaps over the course of a week, or a fortnight etc etc...

If anyone has any ideas then please let me know.
Thanks.

In my 54 years of experience nothing is as hard as people make out. Asa mechanic told me when I was 18, it's just nuts and bolts.

Engine crane…decent set of tools…Haynes manual…Land Rover forum to ask questions…good safety practices…careful sourcing of quality parts…bit of common sense…nothing you and your lad couldn’t do. I’d get stuck in if I were you guys…git some!

In my experience as a slovenly mechanic, anyone helping who is not a mechanic will actually slow the job down significantly, so getting it cheaper might not be as simple as you think.
When the boss decides to help me by removing stuff, it always causes me more work.

They will remove parts in the wrong order, not assess the parts as they are removed so you only find they are shagged when you go to build it back up, never put your tools back where they came from so you cannot find them, ask you endless questions which then means you make mistakes as you are not concentrating on the job, having people watch you work will psis off 99 percent of mechs, the list is endless.
