Hi all.
Just wondered what peoples thoughts are on fitting a K&N filter in place of the normal paper filter on a p38 4.6.
Cheers Rob

Hiya

When i bought my P38 - I ordered & put one on . truth be it i cannot say i could do a before and after

the one i remove (paper) was grubby but not horrific

what i have noticed that is worth the small investment is to regularly change the polen filters in the front bulkhead they get really caked in summer with all sorts of nature`s gunk & more

Because they are not kind to the air flow meter, there is nothing wrong with the OE one.

i have come across this before, if you dont oil it it will be no prob to the air flow metre but it wont work as well as a filter, so as its been said you may as well stick with the factory filter and change it regularly..........

Don't get this oil and air flow meter problem, how much oil are you splashing on it. I have pipercross and k&n fitted to my vehicles my sons have pipercross fitted to both their's and I doubt if there is a teenager out there who has not replaced the standard one with an aftermarket one. My friend has a v8 running on gas and he has done the same. The outer foam gets oiled and it should not be leaking past the inner filter.

Does it make a difference, a little bit on a standard engine but a damn sight cheaper in the long term and less maintenance. 100,000 miles they quote before a clean, but I clean mine more often, and properly.

It also looks better and free's up some space.

you wont be able to wade with it obviously but the ralley boys thrash through water without much problems, and it's unlikely that it will suck water unless you submerge it.

If you are going to buy one go to the breakers first, lots of boy racer cars and you can get them for a fiver, or buy new for 40 quid upwards.

Maybe I'm just old before my time but I STILL cant see why on earth you would fit a K&N filter to a Land Rover product?! Its stupid, your Range Rover is NOT a sports car and as such doesn't need a sports type filter

Not only that, splash through any large puddles and it will just act like a straw and then you will have problems. Theres nothing wrong with the original setup as has been said. :p

Hiya Wills

Well the top & bottom of is - if your happy with OEM filters - stick with them & dont buy a KN

the question was with regards to people`s view on the subject ( Iassume that if one had one installed - then one may be able to offer better comment)

I have one in the OEM air-box on the P38 & cannot say i have noticed a really difference it cst about 24 quid from paddocks and for that price it was worth buying.

I also have a KN (cone form installed on my modified 300tdi) & that makes a big difference.

With regard to the idea up rating OEM stock LR (Range Rover) parts
I have a uprated the steering damper on mine to a Bilstein that makes a difference - what about the koni-shock upgrades that people up-grade too

Finally
The biggest upgrade that many many P38 Diesel users do is to Re-chip and use enlarged intercoolers! also not OEM spec from LR

all the best

exactly!! i got one on my supra, thats required for the turbo to spin freely and help to push out 320hp, i got one on the mrs rover cabriolet, 1.6 honda twin cam but i never even thought about putting one on the r/rover! its not that sort of motor!
so i totally agree with the above.

p.s. the oil issue, no! its not flooded on but it tends to travel a bit and the afm on supra's dont like that at all, no one oils them! remove and wash them out twice monthly but never oil..........

(the afm is the karman vortex type and the electronics that meassure the vortex gets screwed up by the filter oil.)
