We are trying to mend a Discovery 300 tdi engine which started to slow down, wouldn't restart and has not fired since. We have done all the diagnostics incuding fuel, compression, inspections, glo plugs, cambelt, electrics. All check out but still no joy.

My husband is a mean mechanic and this is the first time I've seen him puzzled in over 15 years. We've even had advice from the local Landy dealer (who told us to run all the obvious diagnostics).

We're not the only ones flummoxed by this. Every one in the village has tried as the Landy belongs to the Landlord of the local.

I just thought that someone out there may have an idea or a hunch to follow. It's bugging both of us. Him, because he can't find a way in; me, because he spends all his time on it rather than gardening!

Please help if you can. We're not Landy specialists and this is a favour for a friend.

Thanks folks. I'd really appreciate your help for the sake of our marriage (he's spending far too much time in the vicinity of the local pub).

Regards,
Max.

had a problem like this long time ago, have read your post i take it the fuel cut off switch is ok and not restricting fuel, have you cracked off 1 of the injector pipes the problem i had was the fuel filler cap was not breathing causing big vacuum in tank so try loosing off cap, what year is the 300 is it auto or manual does it have edc fitted tiga.

Hello,

Thank you so much for your reply. Paul has done all of that stuff.
The Landy is not edc, he doesn't know what 'tiga' means.

It's got exhaust bypass control system. Doesn't run with pipe from intercooler fitted or not fitted. Valves, injectors, pump timing, cam timing, lift pump and many other things Paul is espousing checked all present and correct - if you know what I mean.

It's 95/96.

Paul says 'why does fuel shut off solenoid have three wires when there is no edu? Manual and wiring diagram suggest one wire (solenoid functioning). Is there a timer solenoid he wants to know?

Very kind of you.

Thank you so much. This is wierd. I'm just the typist here but as I say if I can drag him away from the pub then it's worth it.

Paul says: 'It's driving him crazy'.

I guess you can tell that the fact I am involved at all is a desperate mesure.

its me im tiga, will have a look at the wiring diagram reference solenoid cut off and 3 wires, there is no crank signal pick up is there any smoke coming out of the back on cranking, its a simple system really if it cranks its not immobilsed on that side and if your getting power to the fuel cut off not getting immobilised that circuit,my 96 disco only has 1 wire to fuel cut off,the 3 wires does ring a bell as i fitted a toad alarm and im sure there are 2 12v feeds to the switch and 1 earth his was a 97 also manual not sure why some are different will have a read and a think going offline now have work tomorrow tiga

remove the 3 wires off the solenoid find which one is the ignition live and reconnect it cause that is all you need to run, if there is fuel to the injectors and it is corectly bled up it should run as there is not ecu to say otherwise, and as long as the engine timing isn't out (belt jumped some teeth or bottom pully loose/broken or tensioner fault) Has he removed the stop solenoid on the pump to check it hasn't broken up. Also check in the solenoid hole for metal filings from inside the pump ( work at a truck dealership and alot of them have the same/similar pump as fitted to yours and they suffer from this alot)
Hope to have been of some help
Graham
