just dies

i have a 1987 gmc high sierra 4 wh drive. it will run fine for a while and
then out of the blue when you step on the brake it will quit running.when
you try to restart it you cant get any power to even lite up the radio.it
just makes a popping sound in the ignition switch.then after a while you
go out and it will just start right up like nothings wrong.sure could use
some help with this one.

The first two things I would look at would be the ignition switch and the
positive battery cable.
