Hi everyone.
Two firsts
1. Land rover owner
2. Forum member

I decided on a whim that I would like a Landy. On an even quicker whim I bought one on eBay, without doing a great deal of research!!
I like it, but it needs a lot of TLC. I had it serviced and all the filters were changed. Apparently it recently had a new cam belt.

Questions:

1. It's still smoking quite a bit, particularly when you give it some welly - the previous owner indicate it had been tuned for off-road (something about a lever under a little cap by the fuel pump, which had been rotated half a turn - my garage was not sure about this…) any ideas to cut down the smoke? The service appears to have helped - I'm just concerned for the next MOT in September (and the cars behind)

2. It has a straight through exhaust which exits through the rear NS wing - any ideas if I can get a silencer fitted? It sounds quite cool, but a bit 'young' for me!! And not sure if it will pass the MOT.

3. one of the headlights has no 'beam spread' and needs replacing - where's the best place to get cheap but reliable spares?

4. It has a non-standard rear axle (apparently a Discovery axle) in order to incorporate rear disks - is this safe?

Tomorrow its going to the garage in an attempt to un-seize the wheel tracking adjustment bolts. Not sure if they'll be able to do it.

Thanks if you got this far…

Chris

:welcome2:Think the axel aslong as it's been done properly should be ok I've heard quit a few people swapping axels.
Not heard of that "being Tuned fo Offroading" bit before but Poss i suppose Somebody will correct me if i'm wrong

Might be worth posting this in the Defender section aswell might get more answers

Hi and welcome!

Good first step if you haven't already is to buy a good land rover magazine, Land Rover Owner International is a popular one. It'll have tech articles, adverts for parts, off roading info and ideas for modifications you might want to make.

The smoke could be the fuel pump has been adjusted, I'd done this on my 300tdi and it's simple to put back. The injector pump is on the right hand side of the engine and there's a cap on the top that you can prise off, underneath this is the diaphragm adjustment which has probably been wound clockwise. Back it off a turn or so and the smoke will clear but you may lose some performance.

Exhaust, don't know without looking at it, even with no silencers at all tdis are relatively quiet, the turbo takes a lot of the noise out. It may be you can fit a standard centre box section if it doesn't have one already, depends how much of the original exhaust is left. If not you're looking at a custom fabrication.

Again for headlights and other parts check the magazine advertisers for best prices!

And fitting a Disco axle is a common mod, popular as Discos are cheap to come buy and break for spares, and you then get disc brakes on the rear and the stronger 24 spline halfshafts. As long as it's been done properly you'll be okay, they're a straight swap near enough so not much to get wrong.

Chaps

Thank you very much for that very swift feedback - that fills me with a great deal of confidence! I shall buy a LR mag tomorrow!

I was getting worried I'd bought a dud, but it seems that most things can be rectified!

I've got an Ifor William back box which came on it and it looks a bit agricultural for me - is this a good place to advertise it - its only about 12 months old.

Cheers

Chris
