my 1.8 freelanders petrol consumption has suddenly got worse, its just done 220 miles on an entire tank!!!. the gauge is right in the red so i did the calculations on 12 gallons instead of the 13 that it holds to allow for the bit in the bottom and it works out at 18mpg:eek: . so i asked my boss at work today what he gets out of his hippo and he recons he gets about 340 miles out of a tank on his(28mpg). so what are the main causes of exesive fuel consumption? it's recently had a service with new plugs/leads/diss cap and rotor arm plus filters so can anyone tell me what else i could check or what it could be.

By changing all that stuff it is possible they put the timing too late, that will increase your fuel consumption. Try to put the timing as fast as possible (just before the valves start clicking that is), your car will be swifter and will need less gas. In the workstation they just put it on the timing moment prescribed but every engine is different. (When I got my Opel Manta A new, back in the '60's ((yes ming)) the timing was 5° late where it needed (per the book) 5° early, it ended up, after testing things out, I had to put it and drove it with 12° early and it ran like hell, also much more economical than before and when I took a corner and hit the gaspedal it responded straight away where before it took me about 200 meters before I got "any" response from the engine.

well it's been in the garage today and it's all sorted.the previous posts i placed on erratic idleing and knocking front suspension were sorted as well.
the knocking was knackered anti roll bar drop links.
the erratic idle was caused by an air leak on the inlet manifold,my mechanic said this was more than likely also the cause of the crap fuel consumption as the lamba sensor would be telling the ecu to richen the mixture as to much air was being sucked in.(think thats what he said anyway).
so now the car no longer knocks every time you go over a bump and the engine ticks over lovely and is a lot smoother and more responsive,as for the fuel consumption i'll have to wait till next week when the tank is empty again to find out:D

:D

Good you got sorted. I remember asking you if your engine was pinking in ahother thread but you never got back to me :( , this is caused by rich fuel mix and leaky inlet manifold.

Plus if you do driving in traffic, dont forget that sitting in tail to tail jams gives 0 mpg

yes sorry about that:eek: the engine was not pinking just ticking over rough and trying its best to do an impression of a v8 with a fuel leak:D

well i had oil and filter change\anti roll bar drop links replaced and air leak in inlet manifold sorted and it cost me 141 quid. did not think that was to bad.
