Lately, I hear many people who own Jeeps spouting out this phrase:

"You wouldn't understand man....it's a Jeep thing!"

Ok. I guess I don't really get it. But I am starting to understand
something about " the Jeep thing".

It seems many(not all) Jeepers want to belong to a group of rugged
individualists. They feel that having a rugged Jeep sets them apart
from the rest of society and makes them "different" somehow.
What is this? Words like "belong" and "group" and "individualists"
really seem to contradict each other don't they? It seems many
Jeepers want to be different, just like all the different people.

Here comes Barbi Anne, driving her new pink Jeep onto the gravel
national forest road. Ken is heading her way in his new blue Jeep,
and he waves the "jeep wave" to Barbi. Barbi waves back, smiling and
giggling. "I really belong" , thinks Barbi. " I really belong to
a group of people that like me for my automobile purchase. I feel
really good about that." Barbi Anne smiles a faint smile and
continues down the road. A few seconds later, Outback Johnny passes
Barbi Anne in his new green Jeep, and waves. Barbi Anne waves back.
Continuing down the road, Barbi Anne responds to 34 waves from
Jeepers.
" It's a Jeep thing!" they all yell at her. " It's a Jeep thing!"
Further down the road, Barbi Anne's progress is temporarily halted by
a herd of sheep crossing the road to greener pastures. She listens to
their bleating and babbling, and observes how they all huddle
together.
"baaaaa.....baaaaaaaaa...bleeeeeeeet.......baaaaaaaaa". The sheep
huddle even closer across the road. " baaaaaaaa...its a jeep
thing.....
baaaaaaa.....it's a jeep thing...........be like
us....baaaaaaaaa..........wave....belong.....chew......ba........baaaaa
a ......bleeeeeettttt." The sheep babble even louder, then slowly
pass over a low hill on the horizon. Barbi Anne drives her Jeep down
the road, glad that she was pressured by friends to belong to the
"Jeep Thing".

Meanwhile, Jimmy is on a nearby forest road, about to park at a
turnoff near a fishing stream. Jimmy drives a Chevy 4x4 full size.
He parks his rig and takes his 6 foot fly rod case out of the bed, and
unloads his gear. A man in a toyota 4runner drives by and waves.
The man in the 4runner turns around to talk to the man about the
fishing. " How do you like the full size chevy?" asks the 4runner
driver. " I like it just fine". Jimmy responds.
" how do you like your 4runner?" asks jimmy. " I like it just
fine",
says the 4runner driver.

" What thing is it?" asks Jimmy. " It's not ANYTHING," says the
4runner driver. "it's just a damn car."

This is one of my favorites, and I couldn't agree more, but you should give
credit when you rip off other people's work. "Muskie" posted this first on
September 15, 1998. If you are actually Muskie under another alias, which I
doubt, never mind.

Makes me laugh everytime I hear it, because I do understand. I
understand that not since "Where's the beef?" has a catch phrase
concocted by some madison avenue BMW driver been proudly and mindlessly
parroted by so many people.

It's all just marketing.

"Real Jeeps have round headlights" was much better and made much more
sense 'til the Liberty (Barbie's Li'l SUV) came along.

It truly is a "Jeep thing" that few besides another Jeep enthusiast would
understand... but I would never actually say or display that phrase on my
Jeep as some do. :) But in many ways, Jeeping is no different than any
other hobby that you can spend a lot of money doing.

Actually, you can spend as much or as little money as you want. That's part
of the beauty of it.)

a sheep thing is buying an SUV, which is relatively worthless offroad, and keeping it in
your driveway because you peer has done the same. Whatever one says about jeeps, they are
one of the top 3 vehicles that actually go offroad. the tahoes, expeeditions, durangos,
etc. can only wish they could follow.

as for Macintosh users, well some people like paying more for less and being a minority

Best thing I saw displayed on a Jeep was a bumper sticker with upside
down writing that said "If you can read this, please flip me over."

How many car brands can you think of that are also a verb?

Uhh... My little stock Jimmy can hang with the stock Jeeps fairly well
offroad. And my brother's Pathfinder does pretty damned well with it's
Swampers, although snowbanks have been a problem. lol SUVs are worthless
offroad? Rookie.

To each his own. What do you care?

Actually I saw that on a Jeep too, just beneath the windshield. Must be a
Jeep thing. ;o)

Ford , Dodge, Rover , Triumph ?

calm down, bud. First, I have owned Nissans and run with Jimmys & full size GM and to say
they can keep up with jeeps is a stretch. Rookie? I bet I was offroading when you were
still watching the Dukes of Hazard. Right now offroading is part of my career phase (well,
it gets me to where I am working). SUV's are for the most part worthless in any type of
moderate offroading situation; unless you consider undersprung, minimal ground clearance,
over weight and over sized characteristics positive.

As for the Mac v. PC; is it your contention that opinions are not allowed? FYI if you work
in a field that deals with both formats and the problems therein, it makes one hell of a
difference. I'll make it easier. Cruise the software section and see what it's like. Hint:
does beta v. VHS ring a bell?

Those are verbs? Triumph, maybe ...

Let's go <insert your favorite ride here>ing. Let's go Truimphing? Let's go
Fording? Dodging? Nope, only "let's go Jeeping." makes any sense as a verb.

As a multiple Jeep owner I couldn't agree more. Jeep wave? If I see
another Wrangler that is decked out and has some mud on it, they get
the wave. If I see biff and buffy in their pristine grand cherokee's?
Not going to bother.. they'd not get off the cell phone to answer it
anyhow. <g> My '93 Grand Cherokee (ZJ V8) was worn out off-road
before selling it, now the '99 Wrangler is often more brown than green
and I'm slowly building it up since I live about 45 minutes from
Tellico and Royal Blue. Jeep thing? Yeah, if you understand!! Too bad
many of the owners don't...

Ownership of a Ferrari does not make one Michael Schumacher, ownership
of a Jeep doesn't mean they get it..

You can ford a river, dodge incoming, and triumph over an enemy. Actually,
jeeping doesn't seem like a verb to me. Isn't the verb in "Let's go
jeeping" go?

The question was how many brands are also a verb, with no reference to a
particular context. Consider: fording a river, dodging the bullet.
Rover is a noun. Triumph is a good one, too, but I can't think of any
others right now...
