jeep stalling

jeep cherokee 4x4 standard

stalls while driving and doesn't always start up again. battery and
conections ok, thought distributor was bad or being dripped on by heater
valve, so replaced. generally only happens in damp or wet weather. when
it happens electrical works and seems as if is just not getting gas.
also used heet dry gas in fuel tank to see if was just condensation

ideas?

The damp weather is a good clue; It's probably a bad sensor contact.
If I had to guess where to start, I would disconnect the CPS connector
and clean it with contact cleaner then put a little silicone
dielectric grease (stuff you use on spark plug boots) on the rubber
seal before plugging it back in. All it takes is a little corrosion
on the connector contacts to foul things up. While you are at it you
might want to do all the sensor connectors the same way - throttle
position, idle air control (both on the throttle body) and the MAP
sensor (on the firewall). The CPS connector will be to the rear of
the intake manifold on the firewall.

Hi:
Does your ignition coil pull out of its housing? My '90 had a
problem where the terminals of the coil were corroding. It was easy to
fix. I think there might have been 3 or 4 screws holding the coil down
in it's holder. The terminals of the coil just sit in metal contacts.
It was so corroded I was suprised it ran! I just brushed them up a
bit. That was 3 years ago. Hasn't done it since.

I will second the CPS connection clean. WD40 will even work in a pinch
as a contact cleaner.
