I have a chance to get what looks like a good deal on an '87 Jeep
Cherokee Diesel.

Being a diesel, I know it's going to be underpowered, but I expect that
from diesels. My interest is more in reliability and supportability.

Does anyone have any experience with this beast?

Thanks in advance,
AP

I'm not sure how low a good deal is for you, but I got an 87 last month
with the 4.0/AW4 Automatic combo with 236k miles on it for 2500. The
miles are high, but this machine is still rock solid and runs perfectly.
I take mine offroad and it's in mint condition inside and out. If you
look you can get a good deal on something nice. I'm not saying the
diesel is bad, I'm just saying if that's not your preference, keep
looking and you'll find what you want. 87 is a good year though being it
probably has a dana 44 in the rearend. Good luck

Check out is it's a VM diesel, 2.5litre. These aren't very good.
Underpowered depends - for a street racer sure. If you're wanting something
for offroading and not just cruisin' round town a diesel is the best you
can get. Submerging is no problem an torque at low rpm's also.

Just a note on the Cherokee diesel units.
Check if it has a french diesel in it.
If it does it is part of a NATO surplus that went to the North
American market.I know of 2 people that have /had them.
They are not fast but they are tough. It went something like this
american body
French engine and German tranny.
If the body is good it is worth getting just for resale value after
you have played with it for a while. The highway milage is very good.
