I'm gearing up to do some regular maintenance on my 300tdi, 110 Defender and I need to find a source of a decent jack and axle stands. Any recommendations on size, type, weight capacity, max height etc for a jack and stands?

Thanks

I just got a Halfrauds 2.5t high lift jack for £40 which is pretty good and seems quite reasonable value

Those clark stands in lro look good too, dunno where you can get em though

October issue of LRM had a 3t jack comparison, and the Clarke came out as one of the best value for money ones. I forget which was the overall winner...

It was the halfords one i just mentioned!
It's HIGH lift (ie higher than normal for 4x4's, NOT a hi-lift!) trolley jack. Does a grand job!

dont even think about using a high lift - even the standard jack that comes with the defender isnt safe as it's base is much to small - i prefer the trolley types as they tend to have larger bases

Clarke - CAX 6TBC 6 Ton Axle Stands - Axle Stands & Car Ramps - Machine Mart

Clarke - CTJ2000G 2-Tonne Professional Trolley Jack - Trolley Jacks, Bottle Jacks, Transmission Jacks & Farm Jacks - Machine Mart

If they weren't safe, they wouldn't be being sold! Like all jacks, they are designed to lift (and lower) the vehicle, it must be supported on suitable stands before doing any work on them. This is where these jacks can have an advantage over a trolley jack, as trolley jacks will often be best used on the same point as axle stands.
Having said that I agree that they must be used with great care.

FFS, not the old Hi Lift not safe bit of any fred about jacks! Unless yer a total cretin they're really good at lots of things. If you're a total cretin they could be dangerous. :D

NOOOO! Read da fred! I was talking about a TROLLEY jack called a HIGH lift one, NOT a hi-lift jack! Someone then misunderstood and went off on hi-lift and that old don't work underneath thing, but it were a mis-read that directed this fred in the hi-lift (wrong) direction!!!

Keep yer pants on, I achally read this fred................weeeeeell, most of it. I did say the hi-lift not safe bit of any fred about jacks. I know it 'sposed ter be fred about a trolley jack wot lifts things hi, but as soon as the good ol', trusty 'Hi-lift' gits mentioned (even in error) they're dangerous.............ONLY WHEN OPERATED BY CRETINS!

Er, thas all. ;)

i have a set of the clarke 6 ton axel stand's and for less than 20 quid a set i can't fault them good base nice quick release(only work's when not under pressure for obvious reason's) and good mount area..

carry them in the boot at all time's as i for one won't work under the landy on any type of jack alone..

as for jack's i carry a clarke 2 ton trolly jack and have two bottle jacks one 10 ton(came with my first range rover) and the other's a dunlop 20 ton i pikeyed :D..

i agree with sean that working on or under the landy on a Hi-lift is mental but they are a lot more usefull than your avarage jack's(how many bottle or trolly's do you know can be used to recover yer landy or pull up a tree stump? ;) )..

Ere me LZ just went down fer about 20 mins, was trying to post this:

Hi-lifts are a great piece of kit! Seen em used as winches before, gettin folk outta stuck, but yeah i agree about not carrying out a major service on a motor propped up on one - like ya say, common sense, that what lacks a great deal in some people (and at times of desperation!)

but it's all a bit passe now!

But you dunt hurt yerself wiv one................ergo, you int a cretin. Jest a big gurls blouse. :p

well if nearly having all yer toes sliced orf by a front disc (which was still attached to a vehicle) turned me into a big gurls blouse then i am guilty

Following this advice, i just got mesself some Clarks stands and they look the business - easy to use, good heavy duty ratchet system and i ordered them 6ish from Machine Mart and they arrived the next day - me toes are safe!!!
