the threads looking for a solution to my llift pump problem. I've fitted 3 in the last 3 weeks all delphi.
I was towing about 1.5 tonne when the engine gradually died then wouldn't start. Dragged it to my mates where we checked through eventually realising the lift pump wouldn't prime. Took that off, new one on and away it went strong as ever, for a whole week... It died again, we couldn't believe it was the lift pump so we checked everything before we came back to the pump and lo and behold it wasn't pumping. We took it off and pumped the arm and it seemed to be sucking air but when we put a pipe on it and fed it into a jar of diesel it wouldn't pump the diesel.
So we put a new pump on and away it went again, for 5 days, same symptoms. This time I emptied and cleaned the tank, a new stack pipe, the sedimentors been removed, another new filter and new lift pump. That was 3 days ago and it's going again, there doesn't seem to be any air getting in but the next step is to replace all the pipes.
I can't think of what's causing it, the weird thing is I tested one of the pumps we took off after a week or so and it was pumping diesel again.
Any ideas chaps.

Did you make sure it was on the cam ?

It was in my hand and I was using the arm and not the primer lever, a pipe in some diesel and it wouldn't pump it, the new one was squirting it out in two moves of the arm. A week or so later I tested the dud one again and it worked???
I'm going bald from scratching me head :)

On the delphi, there is a screw on the top-undo this to reveal a fine gauze underneath-is the guaze blocked with crap?

No it was the first thing I checked, can dragging air stop or temporarily seize the pump ?

I would check one last time that the pumping side is connected to the filter feed, and suction side is too the tank-you get odd results when on wrong way round, but engine still runs as injection pump has powerful suck

No really they're on the right way round, there's even a little arrow to tell you which is the inlet :)
The one I thought was failing seems to be hanging in there. I'll just have to keep changing things till it gets right, I managed to tow a tonne of corn 10 miles yesterday and she didn't miss a beat.

Tis a good idea to fit a bit of clear tube from filter outlet to injection pump inlet,so you can see if any air bubbles present in fuel line-if there is air,you have to find where it is getting in and deal with it

That's the plan next time I can't think of anything else unless it's a bad batch of pumps? At the moment it's working and I'm too much of a coward to touch it till it breaks again :)
It's the way they fail then after a few days work again. The only other thing I can think of is contaminated fuel which stops the pump then after a while evaporates.
I had an issue a year or so back with water in defenders tank. When I say water it wasn't a bit, we drained 2 GALLONS out of her. Someone was coming home from the pub and putting a watering can full in out of my pond
I've got a bit of an issue with my druggie next door neighbour so whilst I'm not saying it's him, it does coincide with him moving in initially and he's just moved back in with his girlfriend.
Thanks for the thoughts 'cos I'm stumped we seem to have tried everything :)

That's what I thought so maybe the valve blocks or sticks and then over a while it 'unsticks' and the pump works again. I've done all the usual stuff which is why I've asked cleverer folk than me. :)

Just for any who are interested, I burned some of the diesel I drained in a stainless steel bowl and there was a 'residue' left at the bottom. The tanks got a padlock on it now and the last pump put on is still working and there's no problems.
Thanks for all the useful input cheers chaps.

Might be worth draining your tank,if "other stuff" has been going in there-so probably not lift pumps dying on you, more likely that lift pump has been pumping a non fuel liquid, and once back on diesel again, works fine-keep the padlock on :)

Yeah it's all been drained and cleaned to the point of me wiping it out with an old towel. The rear floor lifts out so I've got easy access to the tank. I'm still waiting for it to go wrong again but I'm pretty confident that's the cause. To add insult to injury next doors dog got out yesterday and killed one of me chickens.:censored:

Think you will find it will be ok now if no more "odd" goes in the tank-next door sounds quite an example-can't you get him/her to at least replace the Chicken as their dog killed it.Hope all goes well now mate

There's no point really I'm packing in with them as it gets out every few months. If he walked it now and then it'd help, plus his daughter is one of my daughter pet projects. She tries to feed her up and look after her :confused2:
