Re-Assessment of the status of hippos points to problems
The last Red List assessment for the hippos was conducted in 1995. Since then, there have been substantial developments and events that warranted another evaluation of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria as they apply. Efforts to update the existing information were initiated by the Hippo Specialist SubGroup in January 2004. This included email questionnaires to researchers with field experience or to representatives of national agencies, a review of current published literature, grey literature from non-profit organizations, and reports from national agencies.
The Hippo Group concluded that the status of hippos has worsened since 1995 and are recommending higher threat categories. For common hippos, the recommendation was to upgrade to Vulnerable based on evidence of dramatic population declines in key countries, and the rising number of (CH)-human conflicts. The recommendation for hippos reflects the serious crisis this species faces. Evidence of rapid habitat loss (from intense logging), meets the criteria for the Endangered category.
