Hello all, want to pick your brains a bit....ere goes: Ive got a 1970 series 2a with a 2.6 in it and the problem is that it will run for a while, then when it warms up it backfires under load then conks out and is reluctant to go again. I've done the condenser points rotor arm and cap, checked the Stromberg carb over and loads of other stuff but to no avail! Ive even had a quiet word with it and threatened it with the scrapyard but it wont have it....Im at the end of my tether now!!

If you can help me id be ETERNALLY grateful!!

Is the...
fuel mixture correct?
ignition timing correct for the octane rating of fuel your using?
all valve clearences set correctly,bearing in mind they do have a tendancy to burn exhaust valves out.
all else fails sticka su onnit

well i had a similar problem a few years back when i had my 2a,,,turned out to be the gasket on the bottom of the carb,had a small split and was sucking air in,,new gasket and every thing was fine,,,,worth a try .....would run for a while then conk out,then wouldnt restart,,,if left to stand for a while it would then restart and run for awhile..

Found it and i could kick meself! Turned out to be the needle valve that moves up and down with the friggin diaphragm was stickin quite badly....lesson learned i spose..........still, found loads of other stuff that needed doin on the way so not a complete waste of time i spose!!!! :doh:

Couldn't agree more with the above, Had nothing but hassle with the zennith carb I had, first it was running super rich, idle wouldn't adjust, air/fuel mixture had been sheared off, leaked fuel over the manifolds, gave up and fitted the spare webber I had snapped the little bar underneath that connects one thing to another (can't remember name to darn early) so bought another second hand webber fitted it and she runs sweet as a nut, no choke to start her, no rough idling and plenty of acceleration, a good £30 spent in total
