Is this a diff lock problem?

Started slipping in the snow yesterday so engaged diff lock (high and low), assuming that all 4 wheels would turn at the same speed and get me out. However only both wheels on one side would spin or on the other side but not all 4 at once.
Basically this ment that i was still stuck in the snow and i was embarrased that my friend in a Jaguar 4x4 car sailed around me! Iv even got M+S tyres!

Is this a fault or do i just not understand how the standard diff lock works?

I'm sure this might have been covered 'once-or-twice'. But then I didn't know when I first got my Disco. The difflock is front / rear.

BTW: I was out last night green/white laning in ice and snow, pretty big hills and didn't need difflock or low ratio
