Hello Folks

In the process of rebuilding my IRD(yes still ‘at it’.)

Have an issue. I have replaced all the bearing races except one, the one that the lay shaft sits on. I have purchased two rebuild kits from ‘the main supplier of these’ in an attempt to solve a problem. The bearing that has been supplied appears to be the correct inner diameter but the outer is way to small to fit into the relevant recess in the case. I’m querying this right now with the supplier and need a bit of moral support and maybe correcting/advising if I have gotten this wrong.
My main aim is to get my FL1 back on the road.

Has anyone else had an issue regards the bearing kits supplied? BOTH the sets I bought have exactly the same bearings therein. My next question is regards the differences in IRD Between manual and auto? Are there any internal differences as my thoughts were maybe the kits I have were for an auto FL1? A long shot but thought I’d ask.

I attach some photos of the bearing concerned and it’s location for a bit more clarity..the inner diameter seems good but the external diameter is too narrow.

At the moment I feel a little bit thick… with a smidge of paranoia and self doubt..

TIA

Malcolm

Is the size not on the old bearing, Just order a bearing that size?

I think I might have to get in touch with Bell Engineering and ask the question. They themselves refinish IRD’s and they will be able to tell me what’s what and hopefully point me in the right direction.

The auto and manual IRDs are the same. The V6 IRD is slightly different, so maybe you have a V6 IRD?
TD4 ...No paperwork or evidence of replacement..Would the V6 IRD work with a TD4 set up? When I bought the car it had normal routine maintenance(of a sort) all the 'normal' stuff had been done but little of the more 'advanced forum known work/upgrades'...kind of makes me feel the car is original in that respect?

OKAY…

Firstly I have looked at some footage of a video I was making whilst stripping down the IRD.
Luckily the footage includes me removing the ‘Layshaft’ and shows the bearing therein…

I can confirm that I am an idiot … and all will be well…

Share the error. Many others will have already and many will go on to make same mistake !!
yes, the lay shaft (as identified in the TD4 Manual/slots into/connects to crown wheel in IRD) doesn't actually have a bearing fitted to it. The layshaft shaft enters the crown wheel shaft. It's the crown wheel shaft that is touching the bearing inner. The crown wheel and layshaft themselves are 'pressed together' the process of which 'fits the bearing to the crown wheel shaft. The layshaft rests ontop of the bearing but isn't physically connected to the bearing. The race is pressed into the casing though beforehand.

I have video'd the process for a youtube video but that has languished on my PC and is stored in one big folder of 'clips. Thankfully I did this as I have no recollection of this slight variation...it had me stumped. I attach a photo of the bearing in situ with the crown whel and spacer still present...Always make notes and take photos is my new (ish) mantra..
