IRD Ratio's

I have heard that IRD's are different in terms of ratio's, I believe the early vehicle's (up to 2001MY) have a drive difference (front to rear axles) of 0.8% but the later IRD's fitted from 2001MY onwards the ratio is much less, something like 0.2%. Reason I am asking is because I have the chance to buy an IRD off a 99MY Freelander. People have said the earlier IRD causes huge problems with tyre wear because the rear tyres are in effect being dragged. Surely the 0.8% difference should be compensated for by the viscous without a problem if the viscous is in good working order, I thought this is what the viscous is for to compensate for this?

I just wondered what people's thought were?

yu heard correct. No the VCU dont take it out - it makes ther VCU work harder and is therefore more likely to fail (as if it needs a reason!)

It appears that having to compensate for the 0.8% is what led to early VCU seizure with IRD failure as a consequence.

Definitely don't fit an early ratio IRD.
 
The viscous must be a poor design if it cant cope with less than a 1% difference. Might have to get the early IRD as its the cheapest option and I have not got hundreds of pounds to spare at the moment. If I do get the early IRD then I will just run the car without the propshaft, no VCU fitted means no seizure and means I can use the early IRD without a problem.

Except that since it's an early ratio that's known not to last it may not be in great order and you won't know for sure till you've fitted and tested it.
 
Sorry to crash this thread but I have a 2001. How can I tell if its old ird or new? Thanks.
 
Hi All,

is it possible to change the crown and pinion in my 1999 Freelander ird for later ratio crown and pinion.

have rebuilt ird in past, still concerned ratio is making the vcu work too hard.
